Two-Hat V TD's report

The Scene

Here is the official TD's report from Two-Hat V. Those of you who turned up know how good it was. For those of you who didn't turn up this year, read on and think about coming to Two-Hat VI in 2004. If you can't wait that long, you could always try the Melbourne Hat in December!

Despite a slow start to registrations, and the possibility of less than 25 players and only 3 teams, some late registrations resulted in Two-Hat V featuring 38 players, comprising 3 teams of 9 players, and one team of 11 (including a couple of part timers). That total included 3 players from Sydney and 5 from Victoria - thanks again to the interstate players who continue to support the Two-Hat!

There's snow on that mountain again!
This is the setting for the Two-Hat Tourney in Hobart. Once again the weather was magnificent with a fine sunny day of 25C. As with last year, there was a sprinkling of snow left on the top of Mount Wellington.

Saturday October 18th was fine, sunny and 25C in Hobart, with an early morning breeze which moderated during the day. As with Two-Hat IV, it rained the day after, so we were lucky.

Unlike previous Two-Hats, the teams were actually drawn out of a hat this time. However, given that one of our female players had to leave after the first game, 4 of the 5 possible team combinations were eliminated to produce a team selection which ensured that this player was on a team with 4 women (the other three teams had 3 women each), and an extra player - so there was actually only one team combination in the Hat! This twist of fate resulted in the first Two-Hat in which one team remained undefeated, not only in the minor rounds, but also in the finals.

Results and Final

Full results and table of the Round Robin are available. In one semi-final, Freshly Picked reversed the result of the round robin, knocking out a tiring Team Submarine 9-7. In the other semi-final, minor round leaders Go Fish knocked out What He Said 10-4. This led to a final between Freshly Picked and Go Fish. With Go Fish carrying some injured players, Freshly Picked raced to a 2-0 lead. After a long third point, Go Fish started to claw back the lead, managing to equalise and then play catch up to Freshly Picked for much of the game. Late in the game, Go Fish took the lead, and managed to hold on for the victory 8-7.

Party

The party usually starts early in Hobart - with no kids turning up to the party this year, the action didn't really start until around 7:30pm at the Polish Club. Without Dan and Leslie to organise the party and the food, it was left to Kate Godber to provide some live piano music early, before DJ Mike Baker kicked in and the dance floor had a bit of a work out. Thanks to Mike for pulling the party together at the last minute and the University of Tasmanian Ultimate Frisbee Club for supplying pizzas at the party.

Awards

Play of the Day went to Robin Fleming for two spectacular layout D's early in the day. Stan Robert came a close runner up in this competition, with a spectacular layout catch in the semi final.

Play of the Day?
Go Fish captain Cari caught this layout goal in the final - but didn't quite win Play of the Day for it

The Spirit Prize went to What He Said, with spirit scores required for the semi finals this year to separate them from Freshly Picked. I'm not sure who won the party, but it is probably safe to give that prize to LB. Mal Green won the box of smarties for being the first fully paid and registered player.

Dave Cooke, Jemery Day, Madeleine Cahill and Shavawn Donoghue entered the Ten Hat Hall of Fame this year, having each collected Two-Hats on 5 different occasions.

Golf

The inaugural Philip Redneck Ruddock Throw Them Overboard Disc Golf Classic was played in St David's Park on Friday evening, with around 20 players, including competitors in the people wearing skirts and people not wearing skirts divisions. Both competitions were pretty tight, with Mal Green eventually winning the people not wearing skirts with an overall 18 hole score of 1 under (a very consistent round, with 3 birdies and 2 bogeys), Tim Phillips finishing second on par (total of 5 birdies and with the best 9 hole score of 2 under for the second 9) and Ken Suber on 1 over par (4 birdies). In the people wearing skirts division, it looked like the round was deadlocked with Cath Bowker and Jemery Day both tied on 8 over, so a sudden death playoff was held. The playoff took 3 holes before these two could be separated, with an eagle on the third hole finally giving the playoff to Jemery. Unfortunately the playoff was all in vain, as a recheck of the scores showed that Cath's original round was 5 over par, rather than 8 over, (her last 3 holes took 4 strokes each, and yet each were counted as 2 over par!) making her a clear winner in this division.

Media coverage

Media coverage on the Friday before the tourney included an early morning radio interview on local radio station, 936 ABC Hobart and an entry in the Hobart Mercury's What's on section. There was also a short segment on local TV station Southern Cross News on Saturday evening.

Other miscellaneous reflections

Apart from a few cases of sunburn and some tired muscles, it seems like the worst injury of the day was a groin strain, keeping Robin out of most of the final. The most entertaining injury of the day was Wally's cramp as he reached to catch the champagne cork from What He Said's spirit prize. Fortunately LB was on hand to administer quantities of champagne.

ahhh - cramp!
LB applies champagne and a stretch after Wally cramped catching the cork!

In addition to the 4 new entries to the Ten Hat Hall of Fame, Ken Suber and Peter Purdon have attended all 5 Two-Hats - but have only played in 4, with each of them helping out in the organisation on the one occasion they didn't play. 6 others have played in 4 Two-Hats: Craig Mundy, David Griffin, Ian Warren, Jeff Dunn, Sam Waugh and Stan Robert.

Runners Up and 3rd place too...
Freshly Picked (green) and Team Submarine (yellow)

Budget - the books haven't quite been audited yet - but it looks like the Two-Hat has made a modest loss (around $0.57) - but there are still seven Two-Hat IV t-shirts ($10 each now, green shirts only, full range of sizes sizes) and six Two-Hat V t-shirts ($20 each, 2 size M and 4 size L) which are for sale. Any buyers out there? All profits will go to the Tasmanian Ultimate Association.

If you have any good photos from the Two-Hat that you are willing to share, let me know. In the meantime, some photos and graphics are available, including a link to about 57 photos on Charlie Prevost's web page.

See you next October at Two-Hat VI.

Cheers
Jemery (Two-Hat TD)
