Here is the official TD's report from Two-Hat VI. Those of you who turned up know how good it was. For those of you who didn't turn up this year, read on and think about coming to Two-Hat VII in 2005. If you can't wait that long, you could always try the Melbourne Hat in December!

Two-Hat VI saw the fastest ever start to registration, with requests to register starting before registration officially opened! A steady stream of registrations meant that the usual last minute concern about whether there would be sufficient numbers of players so that each team would have at least 2 substitutes turned into a question of would there be 4 teams or 5? Two-Hat VI featuring 48 players, comprising 3 teams of 9 players, and two teams of 10. That total included 4 players from Sydney and 7 from Melbourne - thanks again to the interstate players who continue to support the Two-Hat!
This is the setting for the Two-Hat Tourney in Hobart. The Two-Hat features both mountain ...
... and river views!
Saturday October 9th was fine, sunny and around 20C in Hobart, with light breezes. As with previous Two-Hats, the teams were actually drawn out of a "pseudo-hat" again, and appeared as if by magic on the morning of the tournament. As with Two-Hat V, the Two-Hat gods conspired to produce yet another unbeaten team, in both the minor rounds and the finals. There is one player with an unbroken run of 11 Two-Hat victories, but so far the TD has refused to release the identity of this individual!
Put that cup on!

Some players caught the disc ...

... while others tried hard.
Full results and table of the Round Robin are available. With a record 5 teams, the Brown Barbaloots were the first team to miss out on a semi final place in Two-Hat history - but they managed plenty of drinking and heckling on the sidelines during the finals! Both semi-finals saw results repeated from the round robin games. The Flying Purple People Eaters 2 started very strongly against minor round winners Little Johnny's Satanic Minions, racing to a 3-1 lead, before the Minions came back and took the game 11-7. In the second semi-final, Hangover Blues repeated their very tight 9-8 minor round victory over The Sigourney. This led to a final between Little Johnny's Satanic Minions and Hangover Blues. With both teams starting to look tired and players cramping up all over the place, Little Johnny's Satanic Minions raced to a 5-0 lead, before Hangover Blues pulled it together and started trading points. After time cap, the last point was scored by Felix Kennedy, who started the point with a stubby in his hand, and finished the point with a spectacular knock on layout catch for a goal, and a 12-7 final score to the Minions.

The party usually starts early in Hobart - with only a couple of kids turning up to the party this year, and plenty of other election night parties competing for attention the action didn't really start at the Polish Club until around 7:30pm, and started to fade around 11:00, or more accurately, move down the road to some live music at the Trout. Thanks to Tim for running the party and the University of Tasmania Ultimate Frisbee Club for their contribution.
Play of the Day winner Felix Kennedy in action on and off the field.
Play of the Day went to Felix Kennedy for the last goal of the day. An honourable mention goes to Jeff Dunn for a spectacular reflex bobbled goal in the first game, which was eventually caught millimetres above the grass.

Patrick from Little Johnny's Satanic Minons was happy to layout for anything. It looks like only the spectators touch the ground at the Two-Hat!
The all important Spirit Prize went to the Brown Barbaloots. I'm not sure who won the party, I thought it was safe to give that prize to Wally but according to him, it's "more likely to be the Melbournites". Jen Antonchuk won the box of smarties for being the first fully paid and registered player, with Cathy Bowker a close runner up in this category (I hope Jen shared some smarties with Cathy!)

Brown Barbaloot spirit. Note their barbaloot suits - if only they had some truffula fruits.
Craig Mundy, Jeff Dunn, Ken Suber, Sam Waugh and Stan Robert entered the Ten Hat Hall of Fame this year having each collected Two-Hats on 5 different occasions and Dave Cooke, Jemery Day and Shavawn Donoghue each collected their 11th and 12th hats.
The second Philip Redneck Ruddock Throw Them Overboard Disc Golf Classic was played over 18 holes on the new combined courses of St David's Park and Princes Park on Friday evening. Around 20 players participated, including competitors in the people wearing skirts and people not wearing skirts divisions. Both competitions were keenly contested, with Ken Suber eventually winning the people not wearing skirts division with an overall 18 hole score of 5 under, (setting a new course record of 5 under par for St David's Park, and finishing with a new Redneck Ruddock Classic record of 5 under par, including an eagle, 5 birdies and one double bogey), Joe Boyer finishing second on one over par (total of 4 birdies and with the best score for the second 9, in Princes Park, of 2 under par) and Asher Gentle third on 2 over par (2 birdies). In the people wearing skirts division, there was a tight tussle between Shavawn Donoghue and Jemery Day, but despite some efforts, Jemery Day took out the title with a round of 1 under par (6 birdies), compared to Shavawn's 2 over par (3 birdies) and Wally's 11 over (hmmm not many birdies at all in this total, but a very nice skirt!). Cathy Bowker was so nervous about defending her title, that she missed her plane in Melbourne, and arrived too late to play the classic! Come back next year Cathy!
Media coverage on the Friday before the tourney included two separate articles in the Hobart Mercury, including the Sports pages and the What's on section. There was also a short segment on local TV station Southern Cross News on Saturday evening.
Thanks are due to a number of members of the Hobart ultimate community but in particular:

Several people have suggested that the cost of the Two-Hat is somewhat high and they are interested to know where the money goes. The TUA is an incorporated, not-for-profit organisation and has to be independently audited each year. According to the 2003 audited statement, Two-Hat V made a total profit of $98. What this statement does not show is a "hidden" subsidy/gift of $127, (covering the costs of game discs and pizza at the party) from the Tas Uni Ultimate Frisbee Club. Without this subsidy, the event would have run at a small loss!
In 2003, the costs per player were roughly: $25 for producing the t-shirts (we needed to print more t-shirts than we had players); $5 per head for the cost of lunch (extremely cheap, especially given the quality of the lunches and given that Stan provided his labour and expertise for free!); $7 for field hire (expensive - but very nice fields and they do have grass on them!); and $5.50 for prizes and miscellaneous expenses. The average fee collected per player was $40.42 and sales of sports drinks, chocolate bars and spare t-shirts raised just over $4 per player.
In 2004, the costs per player were roughly: $23 for producing the t-shirts; $7 per head for the cost of lunch (bigger lunch budget than last year!); $5 for field hire; $2.50 for AFDA fees; $7 for the party and pizza; and $1 for advertising, prizes and miscellaneous expenses. The average fee collected per player was $35.39 and preliminary figures suggest that sales of sports drinks, chocolate bars and spare t-shirts raised just over $1 per player so far.
If anyone wishes to inspect the detailed Two-Hat VI financial statement, talk to Jemery. Any proceeds from the Two-Hat go towards supporting the growth of ultimate frisbee in Tasmania. Any losses are covered by the TUA. If anyone still thinks that the Two-Hat is expensive, and that they could run it for less, feel free to apply for the position of Two-Hat TD in 2005!
Limited numbers of excess t-shirts are still available for sale including one Two-Hat IV shirt ($10, size L: 1 jade shirt only), 4 Two-Hat V shirts ($15, 4 shirts all size L: 2 green, 1 black, 1 red ) and 6 Two-Hat VI shirts ($20 each, 3 size M: all aqua, 3 size XL: 1 green, 1 purple and 1 sand). If you want to reserve one of these shirts, talk to Jemery. All profits go to the Tasmanian Ultimate Association and support ultimate frisbee in Tasmania!
