Two-Hat IV TD's report

The Scene

Overview

Well it is a little overdue - but here is the official TD's report from Two-Hat IV. Those of you who turned up know how good it was. For those of you who didn't turn up this year, read on and think about coming to Two-Hat V in 2003. If you can't wait that long, you could always try the Melbourne Hat in December!

There's snow on that mountain! and river views too...
This is the setting for the Two-Hat Tourney in Hobart - if you look carefully you should be able to see a sprinkling of snow on the mountain. If you prefer water views, we have these too!

Despite an early rush of registrations, and the possibility of over 50 players and 5 teams, some late withdrawals resulted in Two-Hat IV featuring 44 players, comprising 4 teams of 11 players - but still record numbers for the Two-Hat. That total included one player from Sydney and 11 from Victoria - thanks Victoria for providing our 4th team!

Saturday October 12th was fine and sunny in Hobart with a little wind which strengthened during the day. It rained all day on Sunday, so we were lucky.

Unlike the Melbourne Hat tourney, it is pretty hard to find the hats at the Two-Hat - but the team balancing and selection process is taken pretty seriously. In the last 3 Two-Hats every team has had at least one win in the round robin, and in all 4 Two-Hats to date, no team has remained undefeated in the round robin.

Again in contrast to the Melbourne Hat, in the Two-Hat we play games to 21 with no half time. There is a 50 minute time cap however!

Results and Final

Results

Full results and table of the Round Robin are available. Despite appearances, the final ranking wasn't decided by ranking the "points for" column! In the semi-finals, Orange Organix managed to knock out the top ranked Butch, winning 7-6 in a tight game, and the Monsters reversed their round robin result to oust the Zombies, 9-6. The Monsters were up 5-3 at time cap in the final, having scored one up wind point, but the tournament rules stated that the last point had to be finished. Almost half an hour later, Organix finally managed to score the second upwind point of the game, but lost the game 4-5.

Flying Plastic Zombies Rule OK!
Team photo for the Flying Plastic Zombies. They didn't win the tourney - but at least they had a nice team photo, and they did win the party!

Party

Halloween Party

The party starts early in Hobart - we had lots of kids, so the Halloween costumes and food started coming out soon after 6:00pm at the Polish Club. Instead of the traditional post tourney pizza, there was an amazing multi course feast arranged by Leslie with contributions from many of the locals. The dance floor was packed early with kids in fancy dress, although some of the dancing was a little non-traditional. I'm told that the dance floor kicked off in a more spectacular fashion after the food was over - but I had to take my kids home to bed!

There is a photo of Matt and Naomi which needs to be inserted here - but I'm still waiting for a digital version of it! It was supposed to be coming anyway!

Awards

Awards

Play of the Day went to Brendan for a spectacular layout catch early in the day. There were three nominations for this award - but only Joe saw all candidates for this prize, so he was instantly appointed the judge, Jeff and Paul Egan received honourable mentions. Hope you enjoyed your Bananas in Pyjamas bubble bath Brendan!

Play of the Day winner
Brendan has the red hair - almost as loud as the t-shirts! Sorry we didn't get a photo of you laying out Brendan!

The Spirit Prize went to Butch, the "Victorians and the Plastic Zombies" won the party, Matt and Naomi won the Halloween fancy dress prize and Gabe and Dan established new dance standards at the party (check them out at the Melbourne Hat if you missed it).

Other miscellaneous reflections

Two-Hat IV featured the worst Two-Hat injury in history with Alex spraining an ankle early in the day, and sitting out for the rest of the day. Doesn't quite match the Melbourne Hat and their broken bone jackpot raffle.

7 people have attended all 4 Two-Hats: Jemery, Shavawn, Madeleine, Dave Cooke, Peter, Ian and Sam - and Peter Purdon has managed to win three of them!

Budget - the books haven't quite been audited yet - but it looks like the Two-Hat has made a modest profit ($92.28). There are also some assets leftover, some staminade and Two-Hat III t-shirts ($10 each now, large sizes only) and Two-Hat IV t-shirts ($15 each now, green shirts only) which are for sale. Any buyers out there? All profits will go to the Tasmanian Ultimate Association - currently existing in a pre-natal form.

See you next October at Two-Hat V.

Cheers
Jemery (Two-Hat TD)
