2008 Hobart Summer Social League

Overview

The 2008 Summer League ran for 8 weeks from February 18 to April 14 (with breaks for a couple of public holidays) on Monday evenings, from 6:00-8:00pm (again with 2 divisions), at Sandown Park, in Lower Sandy Bay until teh end of March with eh last two weeks of games (the finals) played at the Rugby Field, Sandy Bay. The league co-ordinator was Joe Boyer, with help from Halena Bilton (Beans). Beginners and new players were most welcome.

Joe!

One free Learn to Play session was run from 6:00-7:30pm on Monday February 4. This was a great way for new players to learn about ultimate and the Summer League, and to try the game before signing up for the league!

Joe and Beans' Super Summer League blurb

Hello and welcome to the Super Summer League 2007! It's time to work off that Christmas gut, say hello to summer and to your old Ultimate friends out on the field, playing the best darn sport there is!

So, what do we have for you this Summer? A rather exciting League, that’s what! After Spring League's incredible introduction to two divisions, we're following the same format! That's right, Social Division and Div 1 will be once again run on the same night, in the same location, but with a few minor tweaks to ensure everything runs smoothly. Here's what you need to know:

Dates

4th of February! Come and try! Tell your friends, tell your family. There is no need to be registered for the come-and-try, you just need to turn up (and bring a disc if you've got one, of course). Players of ALL skill levels are encouraged to attend, we can guarantee that you will learn something no matter what your skill level.

The 11th of February is a public holiday, so we're choosing not to start the league then. This means it's a free week of pick-up ultimate. Just turn up around 5:55, we'll randomly distribute the players onto teams, and we'll just have a fun game of ultimate. Great for new people to pick up the necessary skills, and good for all players to learn what it's like playing with players that you're not normally used to.

That means that the league starts properly on Monday the 18th February. Everyone should be there by 5:50 at the latest, giving us enough time to make the required team announcements and hopefully get the first game on time. Remember that, every week, the games are supposed to start at 6, not later. Everyone should be there, with their boots on, well in advance.

Divisions!

Not sure which division to play? We're not intending to change the requirements for a team in each division, so if you were happy in the division you played in Spring, you should register for the same division again.

If you played Social Division in Spring league but are looking for more of a challenge, we can certainly cater for you. You should speak to one of us, or an experienced player from your social division team, to ask about playing Div 1 in summer.

Spirit!

Spirit is a very important aspect of Summer League and we’d like to ensure that everyone is playing in a Spirited fashion and on the same page when it comes to Spirit. The best way to ensure we’re playing a great Spirited league is to ensure that everyone is clear about what Spirit actually is, and how to give Spirit scores. More will be said about Spirit when the league starts, but for now here’s a great description of Spirit (from the rules!):

“Ultimate has traditionally relied upon a spirit of sportsmanship which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of the bond of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed upon rules of the game, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate adverse conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting of opposing players, dangerous aggression, intentional fouling, or other 'win-at-all-costs' behaviour are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players.”

Along with that, here's the suggested way to gauge Spirit scores for your games:

Spirit is scored out of 10 (no half points). The following can be used as a guideline for scoring spirit.

Fees

Summer registration fees were as follows:

All prices include AFDA membership for the duration of the league.

Rules

The rules for the Hobart Outdoor Ultimate Leagues are based on the WFDF rules, which were updated as of April 2007. The League Organiser takes the position of the TD under these rules. There are a few exceptions to these rules. Check the latest local rules here. There are a few exceptions to these rules and a couple of recent modifications.

Finals and Awards

Thanks to Joe (and Beans) for their work as Summer League organisers!

League Organisers' Report

It's over! All the games, all the fun in the sun, and the nights under lights, it's over for another season.

But wasn't it fun?

Firstly, the winners in each division were as follows:

Division Premiers Spirit Winners
Social Division Bloo Pancake
Division 1 Mash Foot Hrot

Pancake won the spirit award for Social division with a massive 49 points (ave. 8.1). Bad luck to Thexy Threes, who were one point behind on 48, proving that you can win games and be on top of the ladder while still playing with good spirit.

Congratulations to Foot Hrot for winning spirit in Division 1 with 38 points (ave 7.8). Spirit in this division was also ridiculously close, with Menzies 1 point behind on 37, and the THREE teams all equal on 36. Incredible effort, shows that Div 1 was playing with a very high spirit, despite being a highly competitive league.

Awards table:

Division Premiers Runners-up 3rd place Spirit Winners Style in final Best recruiter Most improved female Most improved male Guts in final
Social Division Bloo (x) Thexy Threes (y) Under Your Bed Pancake - - Anthia Pittas (Pancake) Andrew Binny (Under Your bed) Matt Smith (Thexy Threes)
Division 1 Mash (w) Bob Loblaw's Law Blog of Endor (z) HUC Foot Hrot - - - - Ash Martens (Mash)

Congratulations to Andrew and Anthia for winning the "most improved" awards. They both won folding chairs that they can bring to their future ultimate leagues (because I know they're going to sign up again next spring, with whole teams of recruits... right?)

Matt and Ash both receive a snickers bar for their respective impressive feats in their finals.

Final Standings of Social Division

  1. Bloo
  2. Thexy Threes
  3. Under Your Bed
  4. Pancake

Final Standings of Division 1

  1. Mash
  2. Bob Loblaw's Law Blog of Endor
  3. HUC
  4. Free Lily
  5. Foot Hrot
  6. Menzies

Some people deserve a special mention for picking up double-prizes. Jemery Day, Steve Wright and Ash Button managed to be on the winning teams in both divisions, and Jase de Puit, Masni Bennett and your co-TD Beans managed to be on the spirit-winning teams in both divisions. Congratulations guys. Good luck? Good Management? Is it pure coincidence or do these guys really make that much difference to Spirit?

Thanks to Izzy for cooking on the bbq all night, thanks to Tim Johnson, Stella Foley, Ash Buttons and Matt Smith for sticking around to clean up afterwards last night.

That's it, we're out of here. Thanks for playing, we hope you enjoyed it.
