2006 Hobart Winter Indoor B-League

Overview

Winter social league is often run indoors and this year's Winter Social B-League was no exception. Once again indoor league moved from the traditional Monday evening to Wednesday evenings, due to issues of court availability.

The 2006 Hobart Winter Indoor Social B-League ran for 8 weeks from July 19 to September 6 on Wednesday evenings, from 6-7pm (with a new earlier start time), at Hobart College Sports Hall, Mt Nelson. This involved two 50 minute games played simultaneously, with one game on each court (and swapping courts half way through each game) and with each team playing only one game per night. Note that this is is a change from the two or three game per night schedule used for previous indoor leagues. The league co-ordinators were Sarah Robinson and Basil van Riet - Basil collected the cash (for anyone who didn't get organised enough to do an electronic transfer or deposit in a Connect Credit Union branch).

Indoor league uses a basketball court with the goal circle as the end zone and playing with teams of 4, minimum of 1 woman on the court at all times, defence must match offence (if possible). Each game is 50 minutes long and the stall count is 7.

Because field space was limited for this league, it operated on a strictly first in best dressed basis, with total player numbers capped at 32 players (8 per team).

Fees

Registration fees were as follows:

All prices included AFDA membership for the duration of the league.

Rules

The rules for the Hobart Indoor Ultimate Leagues are based on the WFDF rules. The League takes the position of the TD under those rules. There are a few exceptions to these rules. Check the latest local indoor rules here.

Rule Changes for Winter Indoor League 2006

Cleats

In addition to these rules, playing in cleated shoes in this league is just plain stupid! Get your self some suitable shoes (runners) for running around in a gym!

Dropping the pull

As in all leagues in Hobart now, dropping the pull now results in a turnover. If someone from your team touches the disc but fails to catch it when it is first thrown into play by the opposing team, then this will be deemed a turnover and your opponents will take possession of the disc. This is an official WFDF rule of ultimate frisbee, and the TUA committee is standing by its decision to use this rule in all Hobart leagues.

Gender Matching

This is a mixed league, so each team should field a minimum of 1 of each sex on the field. Defensive teams should field the same number of men/women as the offensive team if possible. If an offensive team fields 2 women & 2 men, then the defensive team (team throwing the pull) should also field 2 women & 2 men (if possible). If the defensive team only has 1 woman then they field 1 woman and make up the numbers with men. These guidelines can be waived if a player needs to take a sub.

Weather Postponement

It is indoor, silly - no weather postponement needed!!

Finals and Awards

Thanks to Sarah and Basil for their work as Winter Indoor Social B-League organisers!

League Organisers' Report

The semis were played simultaneously with Dive fairies defeating Disc-o-techs 22-15 and Georges sheepstation defeating Footfault 19-17. The final between Dive fairies and Georges sheepstation was an extremely close game, it was run hard and was fast-flowing. At full time the score was level, with Dive Fairies then winning the deciding point with the final score 22-21. It was a great, hard-fought, well-spirited game that everyone seemed to enjoy, and it was injury-free!

Presentations were held over dinner at the Leaning Tower Pizza and Burger Bar. Dive fairies were presented with the league winners award and Footfault received the well-deserved Spirit award. Matt Petrie won 'best player in the final' and Yvonne Otahal won the 'most improved' award.

Congrats to all and thanks for a very enjoyable indoor league!
Bas and Sarah.
