Spring League was played outdoors at our traditional fields at Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay. This league started on Monday October 16 and ran from 5:30-8:00pm, every Monday night until the finals on Monday December 11. Beginners and new players were most welcome.
One free Learn to Play session was run from 5:30-7:30pm on Monday October 9. This was a great way for new players to learn about ultimate and the Spring League, and to try the game before signing up for the league!
The league co-ordinators for the Spring League were John Kristensen and Tim Johnson, and either JK or Tim will be collecting money for league registration.

The rules for the Hobart Outdoor Ultimate Leagues are based on the WFDF rules. The League takes the position of the TD under those rules. There are a few exceptions to these rules. Check the latest local rules here.
For Spring and Summer outdoor leagues playing in cleated shoes is advisable, but not compulsory. However, wearing cleats was compulsory for safety reasons in the Autumn outdoor league. We don't expect the fields to be as wet or muddy in the Spring and Summer leagues as they are in Autumn.
Suitable cleated footwear includes grass cats (touch footy shoes), soccer boots or football boots. Note that exposed metal on your cleats is strictly forbidden - so check those old rugby boots before using them! Paul's warehouse in Moonah has a huge range of last season's boots for $60-70. Or if you're struggling for cash, the tip shop in South Hobart has a few pairs of second hand boots at bargain basement prices... Runners are acceptable for spring league - although you may find it harder to turn quickly in these shoes
Unlike previous social leagues in Hobart, dropping the pull now results in a turnover. If someone from your team touches the disc but fails to catch it when it is first thrown into play by the opposing team, then this will be deemed a turnover and your opponents will take possession of the disc. This is an official WFDF rule of ultimate frisbee, and the TUA committee are now using this rule in all Hobart leagues.
This is a mixed league, so each team should field a minimum of 2 of each sex on the field. Defensive teams should field the same number of men/women as the offensive team if possible. If an offensive team fields 3 women & 4 men, then the defensive team (team throwing the pull) should also field 3 women & 4 men (if possible). If the defensive team only has 2 women then they field 2 women and make up the numbers with men. These guidelines can be waived if a player needs to take a sub.
Ultimate only stops for lightning! This applies for Spring and Summer league (it can be lots of fun playing in the rain - it's great for layouts).
However for Autumn outdoor League, it can get very cold standing on the sidelines in bad weather. If the weather looks truly dreadful, the league organiser will send out an email to the tas-ultimate yahoogroup if a decision is made to postpone a game.
