2004 Hobart Autumn Ultimate League

Overview

The 2004 Hobart Autumn Ultimate League ran as a 4 team league on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00pm at Hobart College Sports Hall, Mt Nelson, from May 3 to June 21, 2004. Beginners and new players were especially welcome. The league began as a 3 team league, but numbers soon rose and it was rejigged as a 4 team league.

The league co-ordinator for the Autumn League was Jeff Dunn.

Indoor league uses a netball court with the goal circle as the end zone and playing with teams of 4, minimum of 1 woman on the field at all times, defence must match offence (if possible). In this league there were sufficient women to have 2 women and 2 men on the field for most of the league. Each game was 30 minutes long and the stall count was 7.

An article appeared on the 2004 Autumn League in the Hobart Mercury and a couple of fuzzy photos also appear in Charlies's gallery.

Fees

League fees for the TUA indoor leagues are a little more expensive than outdoor leagues due to the cost of hiring the hall. Registration fees for the TUA Autumn league were: $40 standard and $45 late fees. Earlybird fees attracted a $5 discount. Unlike all previous TUA leagues, these prices incorporated AFDA membership fees, giving AFDA membership for all league players for this league only.

AFDA membership benefits include full public liability insurance coverage while participating in or organising any flying disc activity, some personal injury insurance (see AFDA insurance page for full details) while participating in or attending any flying disc activity in Australia, and discounts obtained from organisations/companies by the AFDA for members (such as Rebel Sport and travel discounts). Further information is available from www.afda.com.

Rules

The rules for the Hobart Indoor Ultimate Leagues are based on the 2001 WFDF rules. The League takes the position of the TD under those rules. There are a few exceptions to these rules. Check the 2004 local rules here.

Finals and Awards

Thanks to Jeff Dunn for his work as league co-ordinator! The following report on the finals and overview of the league comes from Jeff:

TD Jeff's Autumn 2004 Indoor League report

Seems like we did a lot in just 12 hours at Mt Nelson!

Registrations were low so we started out with 3 teams. This mini league was a close contest, but Red Cabbages finished on 9 points, Cannabis Sativa on 8 and Black Mumbas on 7.

After two weeks growing players numbers forced us to 4 teams. Black Mambas were now correctly spelt, Cannabis matured to Chartreuse and a Blue Thingo came into being. Chartreuse sometimes transformed to "Charlies Angels", when absentees left Charlie as the lone male for the team.

The play was fierce and ice packs were in hot demand. After 5 more weeks Black Mambas had an emphatic 7 point lead, and Thingo and Chartreuse were battling for the wooden spoon. The spirit points were astonishingly high and even between 3 teams. Chartreuse and Red Cabbages finally shared the trophy after sneaking 1 point ahead of Thingo.

The finals were a sudden-death playoff, so anyone could win. Mamba and Cabbages made their way through to the grand final and Cabbages came out on top, but Mamba put up huge resistance while playing without subs. The 3rd-4th playoff had lots of gutsy layouts and speccy play, but somehow noone could be bothered keeping score. We think Chartreuse got more points?

The grand final awards judge (thanks Shavawn) gave Sarah the style award (most over all style), a one off style mention for double pumping in the air to make a D. to Phan, and guts to Jeff for diving (or maybe falling?) for a D.

This league was both really competitive and good spirited. We had a small intake of novices and they all coped well with being thrown into such competitive games. Fea, Clint, Phan, Melvin, Brad and one-gamer Terry all were worthy contenders for the rapidly-improved-novice award, but Ashleigh got the votes in the end. (Thanks everyone for pitching in for Ashleigh's award drink, and the beer I got with the change!)

With venue costs of $600 and the organisers handling the AFDA fees, we just broke even (I hope.) Extra costs were new ice packs and 2 new discs (we won't play silly buggers with the discs before games in future, will we?!)

My thanks to Jemery and the TUA, to captains Asher, Joe, Shavawn and Tom, to recruiters, and to all players. It takes precious time to organise leagues but I am rewarded by enjoyment of the game and especially by enjoyment of your company.
