2003 Hobart Summer Ultimate League

Overview

The 2003 Hobart Summer Ultimate League (Hobart's 6th league) reverted back to Monday evenings, initially from 6-8pm, at Sandown Park Hockey Fields. Summer league was a 4 team league, running from Monday January 20 to Monday March 17, 2003. The league co-ordinator was Leslie Tse.

For more details and the full sales pitch, see the funky flyer. Thomas Mooore's photos from Summer league 2003 are now available.

Fees

League fees for the TUA Summer league were: $20 for concessions and for players younger than 21 years and $25 for all others. There was a $5 discount for early web based registrations, where a registration form was completed and payment was made by Friday January 17. AFDA membership (for non financial members) costs an extra $10 and lasts until April 2003.

It is compulsory for all players in TUA leagues to be AFDA members. AFDA membership benefits include full public liability insurance coverage while participating in or organising any flying disc activity, some personal injury insurance (see AFDA insurance page for full details) while participating in or attending any flying disc activity in Australia, and discounts obtained from organisations/companies by the AFDA for members (such as Rebel Sport and travel discounts). Further information is available from www.afda.com.

Note that the AFDA financial year runs until April 25, 2003. If you are unsure of your membership, check the details on the electronic registration form. Fortunately Tasmania still qualifies for discounted AFDA membership fees - it costs $40 to rejoin the AFDA in every other state of Australia!

Rules

The rules for the Hobart Summer Ultimate League, were based on the 2001 WFDF rules. The League takes the position of the TD under those rules. There are a few exceptions to these rules. Check the local rules here. These rules were agreed by the TUA committee in 2002.

A series of notes and guidelines for TUA social league captains, including duties for league captains was initially prepared by previous league organisers, including Jeff Dunn and Leslie Tse. An updated version for this league is available as a Captain's Handbook. While this was written for captains, other players may be interested to see what their captain were supposed to be doing and to see some guidelines for the social league.

Schedule

In January and February, there were two games per night, game 1 from 6:00-6:45 and game 2 from 7:00-7:45. From March 10, the league switched to one game per night for the preliminary finals and grand final. The preliminary finals featured games between teams ranked 1 and 4, and teams ranked 2 and 3 at the end of the minor round. These games were played for double points, with the grand final then played between the two top ranked teams after these (doubled) points had been added top the league table. The full schedule for the Summer League 2003 follows, including the team responsible for setting up the fields each night.

Finals and Awards

Thanks to Leslie Tse for her work as league co-ordinator! The following report on the finals and overview of the league is from Leslie:

TD Leslie's league report

And so ends another successful ultimate league in Hobart.

Last Monday saw G-Force take home the premiership and Kapow run away with the Spirit.

To give you a brief break down and not bother with any results list, Tequila Bats and Kapow met in the 35 minute consolation final. Final score (unverified) was Tequila Bats 8 Kapow 4.

That left G-Force to meet Whammo in the 1 hour and 10 minute grand final. It was a tough game played to timecap with G-Force emerging as the victors. Final score (unverified) G-Force 17 Whammo 8.

If anyone disagrees with the final scores, feel free to let me know.

Prize winners at the BBQ were:

Thanks to everyone who played in the league and came to barrack for teams and eat food at the BBQ. Special thanks to everyone who brought food to share at the BBQ and to Jeff Dunn for coming up with the weekly results.

Now as the leaves turn golden and the sun goes to sleep early on, drag out your thermals for pickup in the rain and ulti on the courts with the indoor league. Stay tuned to this bat channel for details.

Oh yeah, LOST AND FOUND: FOUND: flash blue stainless steel water bottle - retrievable from me.

see y'all on another field.
