2003 Hobart Autumn Ultimate League

Overview

The 2003 Hobart Autumn Indoor Ultimate League (Hobart's 7th league) was held Monday evenings, initially from 6-8pm, at Hobart College Sports Hall, Mt Nelson. Although initially called the Winter League a second league season resulted in this league being relabelled as the Autumn League. A drop in player numbers resulted in a 3 team league, running from Monday May 5 to Monday June 23, 2003. The league co-ordinators were Cari Deyell and Madeleine Cahill.

Indoor league uses a netball court with the goal circle as the end zone and playing with teams of 4, minimum of 1 woman on the field at all times, defence must match offence (if possible). In this league there were sufficient women to have 2 women and 2 men on the field for most of the league. Each game was 30 minutes long and the stall count was 7. For more details and the full sales pitch, see the funky flyer. Jocelyn's photos from Autumn league 2003 are now available.

Fees

League fees for the TUA indoor leagues are a little more expensive than outdoor leagues due to the cost of hiring the hall. To play for the full season (which was initially proposed to last from May until August), individual registration was set at $65 ($40 for half a season). With only 3 teams registered, there were some changes to the league structure, and the amended league fees were set at $35 for the first half of the season, with the viability of the second half of the season to be determined later.

AFDA membership (for non financial members) had just been increased for the rest of 2003. The new AFDA fee structure is roughly: $5 for junior members (16 years or younger or full time secondary school students); $10 for novice members (played ultimate for less than 6 months); $20 for renewing members with no injury insurance [$15 for half year]; and $30 for renewing members with some injury insurance [$20 for half year]). Full year AFDA membership lasts until March 31, 2004 and half year AFDA membership [prices listed in square brackets] lasts until September 30, 2003.

It is compulsory for all players in TUA leagues to be AFDA members. AFDA membership benefits include full public liability insurance coverage while participating in or organising any flying disc activity, the option (as long as you pay the additional fee) of some personal injury insurance (see AFDA insurance page for full details) while participating in or attending any flying disc activity in Australia, and discounts obtained from organisations/companies by the AFDA for members (such as Rebel Sport and car hire discounts). Further information is available from www.afda.com.

Rules

The rules for the Hobart Autumn Ultimate League, were based on the 2001 WFDF rules. The League takes the position of the TD under those rules. There are a few exceptions to these rules. Check the 2003 local rules here. These rules were agreed by the TUA committee in 2002.

A series of notes and guidelines for TUA social league captains, including duties for league captains was initially prepared by previous league organisers, including Jeff Dunn and Leslie Tse. An updated version for this league is available as a Captain's Handbook. While this was written for captains, other players may be interested to see what their captain were supposed to be doing and to see some guidelines for the social league. Copies of the Player's Handout are also available.

Schedule

There were 3 half hour time slots between 6:30 and 8:00pm. Each team played two games per night. The full schedule was kept a closely guarded secret! There was no official grand final, but the final round of games was played for double points.

Finals and Awards

Thanks to Cari Deyell and Madeleine Cahill for their work as league co-ordinators! The following report on the finals and overview of the league comes from them:

TD Cari and Madeleine's league report

Well, Winter League ended with some hard fought games on Monday night.

In the battle for the League title, Purrhaps took the lead with a comfortable win over the Purple Frisbee Eaters (who were vertically-challenged for the night with Cookie in Mt Isa). Purrhaps then slugged it out with HuckItToMe to finish with a tie but coming out as League winners on points.

Congrats to the Purple Frisbee Eaters for winning the spirit prize and thanks to everyone who played for making it such a fun and good-spirited competition.

Other prizes went to:

Thanks to all players and spectators for coming out.

Hope to see you all in Winter League II!

Cheers
Cari and Madeleine.
