2002 Hobart Autumn Ultimate League

Overview

Autumn Ultimate League was Hobart's third Ultimate league, following on from the successful 2001 Spring and 2002 Summer Leagues. Once again, this league ran on Monday evenings, with one game per evening from 6-7pm. Because we needed to play under lights, the Autumn league was played at the Uni Oval.

Autumn league ran as a 4 team league, from Monday May 20, 2002 to Monday July 1, 2002. Because of lower player numbers we used smaller fields and played with teams of 5, maximum of 4 players of any sex on the field at any one time. Beginners and new players were especially welcome. Contact the league co-ordinator, Mamoru, if you want more information.

For more details and the full sales pitch, see the funky flyer.

Fees

League fees for the TUA Autumn league were: $5 for current AFDA members and $15 for all others. This is the cheapest league fee you are ever likely to see! The $15 fee for non-AFDA members includes a $10 AFDA fee - a specially discounted AFDA fee which appliesd in Tasmania, giving AFDA membership until April 2003. Note that the AFDA financial year had just begun, so unless you played Nationals in Melbourne in April, your old AFDA membership had expired and you needed to renew your membership. Fortunately Tasmania still qualifies for discounted AFDA membership fees - it costs $40 to rejoin the AFDA in every other state of Australia!

It is compulsory for all players in TUA leagues to be AFDA members. AFDA membership benefits include full public liability insurance coverage while participating in or organising any flying disc activity, some personal injury insurance (see AFDA insurance page for full details) while participating in or attending any flying disc activity in Australia, and discounts obtained from organisations/companies by the AFDA for members (such as Rebel Sport and travel discounts). Further information is available from www.afda.com.

Finals and Awards

The grand final was played between Gingerbread People and White Knights. In the minor rounds Gingerbread People dominated these games, but it was not so easy for Gingerbread People in the final. When time was called, the scores were locked at 9 all. There were a few turnovers, but eventually Matt Foster of Gingerbread People caught the final goal while sliding on his knees right in front of the cheering crowd. Discography won the 3rd vs 4th playoff game.

White Knights won the Spirit competition with an average spirit score of 4.5/5 (scored for the minor rounds only), narrowly beating Red Devils, 4.2. Matt Foster won the Cherry Ripe award for the player with the best style in the final for catching the winning goal on his knees (chosen by Sarah Glover, the previous recipient), Kerryn won the Violet Crumble award for recruiting the most new players to the league (for the second league running) and Felix won the Tim Tam award for the most improved beginner.

To the autumn league coordinator

T'was Mamoru of Canberra, who brought the frisbee craze,
He drove away the good old sports, that served us many days,
He dressed us up in frisbee clothes, regrettable to be seen,
We hurried off to uni, and we played like a machine,
And as we staggered off the field, with air of lordly pride,
A grinning passerby remarked, "you've all been taken for a ride!"

"See here, young man", said Mamoru, "from Aussie to the States,
from Hobart Town to Anchorage, the best sport is ultimate!
It's good all round for everyone, it gets into your blood,
Singing cheers in pouring rain, covered head to toe with mud!"

T'was Mamoru from Canberra who could have walked away,
And left us all on Monday nights, without a game to play.
But ultimate is not just a game, it's more a way of life,
Although I still have trouble explaining that to my wife.
Our teammates all have special skills, both in the game and after,
And though we try to win the game, the best reward is laughter.
For 3 long seasons the Monday league hasn't died - it grew!
There's just one man to thank for this: here's to you - Mamoru!
