Ultimate Fields in Tasmania

Until 1999 Hobart ultimate was largely based at the University of Tasmania. There are now several fields and time slots used used for ultimate.

Sandown Park Hockey Fields

The Spring and Summer Hobart Ultimate leagues are usually played at the Sandown Park Hockey Fields. Features some well maintained grass, and sometimes come complete with interesting line markings and with two long jump pits. From Spring 2007, Sandown Park 1 had lights installed, enabling leagues to be run until 8:30pm.

These fields were also used for the Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament in 1999 and 2000. A conflicting booking by Little Athletics forced a change of venue for the 2001 Two-Hat.

North Hobart Oval

In October 2005, the Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament moved to new fields - the North Hobart Oval, complete with grandstands and more facilities than you could imagine! From 2007, the Two-Hat outgrew North Hobart Oval (not enough space for 4 fields!).

Cornelian Bay Fields

The 2005 Summer Hobart Ultimate league was played at the Cornelian Bayside Fields, near Cornelian Bay, New Town. This was the first time that these fields were used by the TUA. The car park is near the corner of Bell St and Queens Wk. These fields were pretty exposed (windy) so the 2005 Spring League moved back to Sandown Park.

Wentworth Park Hockey Fields

From 2001-2004 the Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee tournament was played at Wentworth Park Hockey Fields, using fields 2 and 3. Features well maintained fields and plenty of space. These are also the fields used for the 2007 Southern Australian Ultimate Championships, the biggest ultimate tournament ever held in Tasmania. More details on the fields, and an even better map with directions from the airport can be found by following links from the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships page. In 2007, Two-Hat IX made a return to Wentworth Park, to accommodate 8 teams.

The Main University Oval

Lunchtime pickup games of ultimate in Hobart are usually played on the lush green playing fields of the main University of Tasmania Oval, a cricket/football oval in Sandy Bay, wedged between Earl Street, the Geology Department, the Uni Rugby Field and the Uni Gym (see map). There is room for two Ultimate fields on this oval.

In some years, hard cleated shoes, including soccer boots and football boots are banned on this oval for the duration of the summer cricket season. Please respect the cricket pitch area!

The Rugby Field

Occasionally we are forced to play pickup on the much harder and bumpier Rugby Field (downhill from the main oval, adjacent to Sandy Bay Road). You would probably want to avoid laying out on this field if possible.

Lower Queenborough

If the Rugby Oval is not available, especially for a couple of weeks in spring (when they typically reseed and topdress both of the University ovals) pickup games are played at Lower Queenborough Oval, on the corner of Sandy Bay and Nelson Roads, just opposite the Casino. Compared to the rugby oval, the grass on Lower Queenborough Oval is lovely and soft, but the fields are just a little bit short here.

Mount Nelson

Indoor leagues in Hobart are played at Hobart College Sports Hall at Mount Nelson, usually in the winter.

South Hobart

Thursday evening pickup has been played at South Hobart during Daylight Savings hours in the past. Exactly where in South Hobart remains a mystery (and rumour has it that this was sometimes played in Taroona) - check out Thursday evening games for the latest information!

Shippies

TUA meetings are sometimes held at Shippies, or the Shipwrights Arms Hotel, 29 Trumpeter Street, Battery Point, phone 6223 5551.
