TUA Old News

April

April 24 Good luck to Bush who will be representing Tasmania in the women's division at the Australian Ultimate Championships to be held at Coffs Harbour, starting tomorrow. Bush are seeded 12th out of 14 teams. The high level Wednesday and Sunday pickup games will be less regular (and will probably change day and location) now that Bush have gone to Nationals. Look for an announcement here soon on replacement times for these pickup games.
April 20 Summer League is now well and truly finished. Wrapping up the results saw Foot Hrot and Pancake take out the spirit prizes and Mash and Bloo triumph in the two league grand finals. Matt Smith and Ash Martens won Guts in the Final awards and the most improved new players were Anthia Pittas and Andrew Binny. Thanks very much to Joe Boyer and Beans for running Summer League. Results and a league organiser's report can be found on the League history page. Meanwhile, registration for Autumn League is almost full. If you want to play the next TUA (indoor) league, you need to register straight away.
April 3 Congratulations to Ashley Button and Michael Dunne who have just been selected to represent Australia in the under 19 open team and to Eliza Burke-Polden who was selected for the under 19 women's team for the World Ultimate Championships in Vancouver Canada (August 2-9 2008). Ashley Button also played for the Australian under 19 open team in 2006, so this is his second (and last) chance to place in this division at World Championships level. Best of luck to Ashley, Michael and Eliza and to their teams.
April 2 Registration for Autumn League is now open. Autumn League will be indoors at Aurora Stadium, Creek Road, New Town, on Sunday afternoons from 4-6pm from May 4 to June 15, with the finals on June 22 from 4:30-6:30pm. Don't miss out - read the full details and register now!
April 1 The minor rounds are now complete for both social and Division 1 games in the Super Summer League. The finals will be played over the next two Monday nights under lights at a different time slot and venue, with games one hour later than normal at the Rugby Field, Sandy Bay. The final minor round games saw no changes in the social division table, with both games drawn. This means the semi-finals will feature minor round premiers Thexy Threes and Pancake in one game and Under Your Bed and Bloo in the second. In division 1 Mash took the lead from HUC in the last round even thought these two teams are tied on points and Free Lily and Foot Hrot both jumped ahead of Menzies at the bottom of the ladder, with Free Lily earning a semi-final place. The semifinals will see Mash play Free Lily and HUC play Bob Loblaw's Law Blog of Endor, with the 5th vs 6th playoff between Foot Hrot and Menzies being held in two weeks time, on grand final night.

March

March 31 The TUA AGM has been just been held with the existing executive office holders all re-elected. Signed copies of the audited 2007 financial statements and a copy of the 2007 TUA President's report are available at the TUA meetings page. If anyone want to help run the association or has any ideas about how things could be done better, feel free to come along to the next TUA committee meeting (May 13), or talk to somebody on the committee.
March 19 With one minor round game remaining, Thexy Threes have ensured they will finish in first place in the social division, after beating second placed Under Your bed this week. The remaining two teams to make the top four will be decided in the last minor round games. Note that this round will be played on March 31 (no games scheduled over Easter). The full game schedule and preliminary team lists are available.
March 14 Good luck to Bush, the Tasmanian women's team which is playing in the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships in Adelaide this weekend. This tournament is a qualifying tournament for Nationals (the Australian Ultimate Championships) to be held in Coffs Harbour in April. Hopefully Bush will survive the Adelaide heatwave!
March 13 Thexy Threes have increased their lead in the social division and Under Your Bed replaced Bloo in second place after round four of the Super Summer League. In division 1 Mash retain first place, although HUC are equal on points and Bob Loblaw's Law Blog of Endor have a game in hand. The full game schedule and preliminary team lists are available.

If you still want to play this league (in either division) and are not on a team already, talk to League Organiser Joe Boyer. The full game schedule and preliminary team lists are available. Joe

February

February 29 As of January 1 2008, the the Australian Flying Disc Association (AFDA) reinstituted Personal Injury Insurance as part of their insurance policy, which gives TUA members some protection when playing in TUA leagues and tournaments and AFDA events. Given that claims to the AFDA's personal injury insurance have a maximum pay out of $1,500, it has been agreed by the AFDA board that the Members' Compassionate Fund will continue to operate in 2008 in order to provide additional compensation for big injury claims. The current low insurance prices are unlikely to last beyond the medium term, in which case the AFDA will revert to using the Member Compassionate Fund as the primary vehicle to assist our members in financial need. regsitering for any TUA event gives you AFDA membership for that event which offers the following Member Benefits
February 27 After two rounds, Thexy Threes maintain their lead in the social division of the Super Summer League, with Bob Loblaw's Law Blog of Endor taking over the lead in division 1. If you still want to play this league (in either division) and are not on a team already, talk to League Organiser Joe Boyer. The full game schedule and preliminary team lists are now available. Joe
February 21 After the first round of games in the Super Summer League, the early league leaders are Thexy Threes in the four team social division and Foot Hrot in the six team division 1. If you still want to play this league and are not on a team already, talk to League Organiser Joe Boyer - but unless you are a woman, it looks like social division is full! There may be room on some division 1 teams. Team lists and game schedules will be available soon. Joe
February 18 The date for the Tasmanian Ultimate Association's 2008 AGM is now confirmed as Monday March 31, at the fields at Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay, straight after div 1 at Monday night league. The agenda includes reports from the president and treasurer, presentation of audited financial statements and election of a new committee and office bearers for 2008. Talk to Jemery or Shavawn if you want to help run the association in 2008! All TUA members are welcome to attend. The agenda and minutes of the last meeting are now available on the TUA meetings page.
February 12 The Australian teams for the 2008 World Ultimate Championships have been announced on the AFDA web site. Congratulations to Tania King and Ash Martens who are the first Tasmanian players to be selected for a senior Australian Ultimate team. Both players were selected for the Australian Women's teams. The AFDA seem to think that Tania is from NSW - but given she spent more time living in Tasmania in the last 12 months than Ash did, surely they both count as Tasmanian players.
February 11 Tomorrow night's TUA meeting will be held at Jase and Maz's place at 3/177 Bathurst St, Hobart (it's the third house back from the street up the drive - they all look kinda the same) from 5:30-7:30pm. The agenda and minutes of the last meeting are now available on the TUA meetings page. All welcome!

Congratulations to the four Tasmanians who have made their respective squads, Eliza Burke-Polden, Ashley Button, Michael Dunne and Steven Wright. Hopefully some of these players will be selected to play on the Australian Junior teams going to the World Ultimate Championships in Vancouver in August 2008. January 15 Training is about to start for both Bush and the Tassie Tiggers, the Tasmanian teams hoping to qualify for Nationals in the Women's and Open divisions respectively by playing the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships (Regionals) which will be held in Adelaide on 15-16 March. Regionals is used as a qualification tournament to attend the Australian Ultimate Championships, which this year is being held over ANZAC weekend in Coffs Harbour from 24-27 April. This year for the first time, four Southern teams (SA-VIC-TAS) will qualify for Nationals from both divisions so both Tassie teams should have a good chance of going to Nationals. If you are interested in playing for either of these teams it is important to come along to training. Training for both teams will be held from 5:45-8pm on Wednesday evenings at the Rugby Field, Sandy Bay. Please bring your cleats, runners, water and of course a disc. All are welcome to come along and improve their skills. For more information, talk to Shavawn Donoghue or John Kristensen.
