2003 President's Report The Tasmanian Ultimate Association was formally constituted and incorporated on March 26, 2003. Since the Tasmanian Two-Hat Tournament was first held, AFDA membership in Tasmania has grown from 3 members in 1999, to 24 in 2000, to 44 in 2001, and to 83 in 2002. Despite the departure of several key members of the Hobart ultimate community in the last twelve months and an increased AFDA fee regime, membership in 2003 held at 77 members. Successful outdoor leagues continue to be held in Spring and Summer, and slightly smaller indoor leagues in Autumn and Winter. Two tournaments were run by the TUA in 2003, Longest Knights in June, and the now infamous Two-Hat V in October. The Two-Hat won the AFDA's "Tournament of the Year" award in 2003. Thanks to organisers Leslie Tse, Jeff Dunn, Cari Deyell, Madeleine Cahill, Asher Gentle, Kate Godber and Joe Boyer for running these events. Two Tasmanian teams ventured across Bass Strait in 2003. The Tassie Tiggers were captained by Shavawn Donoghue and finished in 12th place in the Open Division at Nationals, and repeated Choice Cuts 2002 success by winning the Spirit Prize. The Tiggers improved 7 places on their seeding, and beat teams from WA, Vic, and NSW at this tournament. WOM was the first Tasmanian team to compete at Mixed Nationals. Like the Tiggers, WOM was also captained by Shavawn and finished 14th overall and 3rd in the spirit competition. WOM beat teams from, SA, Vic and NSW. Congratulations to Shavawn Donoghue for winning the highly sought after female Most Valuable Player Award at Mixed Nationals. At the grass roots level, the University of Tasmania Ultimate Frisbee Club provides great support to the Hobart Ultimate community by providing: twice weekly lunchtime pickup games; support in running the Two-Hat; hosting the CSIRO/Uni challenge and the Tasmanian Ultimate Championships; and selling discs. At the elite level, Stan Robert, Shavawn Donoghue and Mike Baker benefited from attending training camps with the Australian Worlds Squad in 2003. On a National administrative level, Shavawn Donoghue served as a director of Human resources on the new AFDA Board. The Tasmanian Ultimate Championships was played over six rounds in 2003 and was taken out by All Bounced Out, captained by Asher Gentle. Joe Boyer designed a new logo for the TUA. Free Come and Try sessions were run prior to the start of both outdoor and indoor leagues (thanks to Craig Mundy and Joe Boyer for running these). On the downside, 2003 saw the TUA's first unsuccessful government grant application. We were eliminated because we couldn't provide an audited financial statement - yet the association was too young to have produced such a statement. They will need to find a different reason to knock us back next year! Financially the TUA is in a sound position, in part thanks to a generous startup grant from the AFDA, and with an additional loan from the AFDA, we hope to print the first Tasmanian Ultrastars sometime in 2004. Special mention should also go to Mamoru Matsuki for providing the inspiration for the formation of the TUA and for initiating and running the first 4 leagues in Hobart, back in 2001. Finally, I would like to thank all the members of the TUA committee, and others who attended TUA committee meetings, for helping to make things happen. Without people volunteering their time and energy, there would be no ultimate in Hobart! Jemery Day. TUA President
