Tasmanian Ultimate Association Meeting Minutes 8/5/2002

Present: Mamoru, Jemery, Dion, James, Ian, Shavawn, Joe

Agenda:

  1. Uni Club
  2. Nationals
  3. Uni Games
  4. Tourneys
  5. Leagues
  6. School League
  1. Uni Club
  2. Not much could be discussed about the university club without Garry, but the only important thing is that a price for discs sold needs to be agreed upon. No one seems to know how much club discs are to buy.

Also, all players playing pickup on Tuesdays and Thursdays should be strongly encouraged to join the club for $6, so that they are insured and so the club gets more revenue.

  3. Nationals
  4. We will look into submitting a bid to host Nationals 2003 in Hobart.

First priority is to scout grounds and find an appropriate place to host it. Shavawn and Joe will do some scouting over the next to weeks and report back next meeting. Major possibilities are the hockey grounds at Cornelian Bay (including the Friends’ School grounds) and Wentworth Park. Other possibilities are to be considered as well.

Second priority is to find out exactly how much support we have from the ultimate community. People who are definitely interested in helping out: are Robin, Stan, Shavawn, Joe, Leslie, Mamoru, Dion. Ian, James and Jemery are interested, but cannot dedicate their time. Other people to be approached are Damian, Madeleine, Gary, Cookie, Jeff, Ken, Dene, Chucky, Kynan, Christian, Alex and Rob. It is believed that Matt, Naomi, Tom and Craig will be too busy, or not in the state, but this should be confirmed. Any names that haven’t been mentioned?

The positions that are needed are as follows: (unfilled positions left blank)

Another issue of highest importance is AFDA incorporation. We need to either get control of the TasFDA (Currently based up north, presided by Leigh Bird) or create another association that can be incorporated and affiliated to the AFDA. The general consensus was that this should be done regardless of nationals, as it is a useful thing to have for tourneys, leagues and schools.

  5. Uni Games
  6. Support for sending a team to the southern uni games is very lacking. Looks like it will fold, as we currently have only 1 definite female and 5 definite males. We need at least 5 and 8 respectively. Mamoru will keep on looking, but it’s not hopeful.

  7. Tournaments
  8. Two-Hat Tourney, Oct 12-13

Needs to have Barbeque, cheer and party.

Possibility of having a 2 day tourney, or maybe 1 and a half.

Proposal for a beach tourney too

    Sometime in Feb.

Shavawn, Joe and Mamoru expressed interest, but if we do get nationals, hmm…

Half day tourney, it was decided we needed a couple before the Two-Hat. June 17th-18th would be ideal, but if there’s a league then everyone will be all ultimated out. So this date depends on the feasibility of the autumn roster (see next section.)

There should also be another one around august sometime, depending on the leagues around that time.

The general verdict is that these tourney’s need to be more social, with barbies and parties afterwards.

  9. Leagues
  10. Autumn – starts Monday 20th May at Uni oval or Lower Queenborough. Mamoru was sure he’d get 20 people, others weren’t so sure. It would go for about 8 weeks, by the sound of things.

    Winter league – Indoor

    July-> September

Mamoru is keen to pass on the organising of the leagues, and it was decided a committee should organise the league. Dion volunteed.

  11. Schools

Mamoru was keen to get a schools league going. This would need to be done through PE teachers, so we need to get together sometime and do this.

Mamoru and Joe were interested, Ken’s, Jeff’s and Tom’s names were mentioned, so they need to be approached. Shavawn said she’d help out if needed, and Leslie’s name was dobbed in. Mamoru is the driving force here, so he’ll get the ball rolling soon.

Meeting adjourned: 10:25. Next meeting, Wednesday 22nd, 8:30 Shavawn’s house.
