TUA Old News

December

December 7 The qualifying finals of the social division of Spring League saw two upsets with 3rd place Dirty Whites defeating the previously undefeated Menzies for a place in the grand final and 5th place Sexy Sixes defeating Disc-o-techs for the right to playoff for 3rd place. A thunderstorm disrupted the division 1 finals, and all games were cancelled in line with the AFDA's lightning policy, which states that if the time between lightning and thunder is less than 30 seconds, all games are to be stopped immediately and cannot be restarted until 30 minutes after the last lightning strike. The full schedule of grand final and playoff games is available on the Spring League page. After the games there will be a BBQ to celebrate the end of the league and to hand out a bunch of prizes.
December 3 Congratulations to Ian Townsend and his team for making the semi-finals of the 19th Melbourne Hat on the weekend. Five other Tasmanians attended the Hat (and didn't make the semi-finals) and there were another 300+ players from other places.

November

November 29 Summer league registrations have just opened for the 2008 season, starting officially on Feb 18, 2008, with a free Come and Try session on February 4 (and possibly an informal pickup game on Feb 11 - Regatta Day holiday). Summer league will be played in two divisions, just like Spring League. Why register now? Well if you enjoyed Spring league, you may want to encourage your whole team to come back for more. In addition, numbers may be limited for Summer league - if you don't want to miss out on this league, registering and paying will guarantee you a spot. Go on - do it now! Thanks to Summer League organiser Joe Boyer for agreeing to run this league. Joe
November 28 The minor round games are now complete in the Spring League and there are only two more weeks of finals games remaining. Congratulations to minor round premiers Captain Wonderpants from the social division (no changes to the social division league table this week) and Short Circuit from division 1. The last week of games saw a couple of changes to the division 1 league table with Short Circuit replacing UTas at the top of the table and 4 Lily taking 4th place from Enforcers. The format and full schedule for the finals is available on the Spring League page.
November 23 Congratulations to Rosetta for winning the female division and Clarence for winning the male division of the the inaugural Tasmanian High School Ultimate Frisbee Gala Day. Around 60 high school students attended from 5 different high schools: Clarence; Rosetta; Ogilvie; Geilston Bay; and Taroona. Thanks to the volunteers who helped to make this day a success, the teachers involved for supporting it and Tania King for co-ordinating the day.
November 22 Information and application forms are now available for TUA travel grants for eligible players wanting to attend the National Junior Training camp in Melbourne in January 2008. This camp is open to all players born in 1989 or later and is intended as training for players who are interested in nominating themselves for selection to the Australian Junior teams going to the World Ultimate Championships in 2008. These camps are also open to players who do not want to represent Australia, but who do want to learn more about ultimate frisbee from some of Australia's best players. This is a fantastic opportunity to increase both your personal skills, your knowledge of the game, and to make some new friends, so if you are at all interested, check out the details and the application form for TUA travel grants on the TUA youth page. The TUA is strongly encouraging eligible players to attend! Australia's Ash Button
November 21 Dirty Whites reign as league leaders was short lived after a close loss to Menzies in Round 6 of the social division of Spring League. Despite this win, Menzies still trail the only other undefeated team, the new league leaders Captain Wonderpants, in the social division league table. Only one more week remains until the semi-finals begin - but it looks like these top 3 teams will be competing for the places in the grand final. Division 1 leaders UTas had their first loss of the season, but they just managed to hang on to their lead in the division 1 league table. UTas and Short Circuit will almost certainly finish in the top two places, so the key game next week in division 1 to decide 3rd and 4th place prior to the finals is the matchup between FH and Enforcers, but with the right combination of results, even 5th placed 4 Lily could still finish in 3rd place! The format and full schedule for the finals is now available on the Spring League page.
November 19 The Round 5 showdown between the two top teams in the social division of Spring League resulted in a tied game between Captain Wonderpants and Menzies. This enabled Dirty Whites to sneak through to become league leaders on a tie breaker, with the top three teams all undefeated, each with 3 wins and 2 ties. The league leaders in division 1 also had a tied match, although they managed to retain their lead in the league table. Only two more rounds before the finals start.
November 12 Youth Ultimate is now being actively promoted in Tasmania with a Tasmanian High Schools Ultimate Frisbee Gala Day to be held at Wentworth Park, Howrah on Friday November 23. More information can be obtained by contacting Tania (mob: 0403 765 757) or by checking out the Gala Day flyer. Any Tasmanian ultimate players under 19 years of age who want to consider attending the National Juniors Training Camp in January 2008 should contact the TUA youth co-ordinator, Joe Boyer, and check out the Training Camp Newsletter #1. Financial assistance may be available from the TUA to help suitable Tasmanian players attend this training camp. Talk to Joe for more details.
November 8 After the fourth round of games in the Spring League, Captain Wonderpants retain their very slim lead in the social division, although Menzies are equal on points and Dirty Whites, who tied in their game against Captain Wonderpants this week, are only one point back, with all three of the top three teams undefeated. This week the initial round robin is completed with a showdown between the top two teams, Captain Wonderpants and Menzies. UTas are still the clear leaders in division 1, with a three point lead over 4 Lily and Short Circuit. Both leagues will be played at Sandown Park for the rest of the season now.
November 7 Minutes of last night's TUA meeting are now available - in record time! The next TUA meeting will be held on Tuesday December 18 at 5:30pm, probably at a pub with dinner and drinks after the meeting. Venue to be decided. All welcome.
November 7 The venue for Division 1 of the Spring League is now confirmed as Sandown Park, without lights, for the rest of the Spring League. Now that the sun is setting after 8:00pm, three Division 1 games will be played simultaneously, initially from 7-8pm, but extending out to an 8:30 finish as the daylight lengthens.
November 1 After the third round of games in the Spring League, Captain Wonderpants retain their lead in the social division but UTas are the new league leaders in division 1, after Short Circuit were forced to forfeit their game because they had no women turn up to play! The league rules state that each team must have a minimum of one player of each sex on the field. If you can't make it one week, please let your captain know beforehand. Updated team lists, complete with captains and vice captains, are on the teams section of the Spring League web page. Division 1 games will be played under lights at the Rugby Field for the next round (round 4) at least - but from round 5 onwards, division 1 may move back to Sandown Park.

October

October 23 After the second round of games in the Spring League, Captain Wonderpants are the new league leaders in the social division and Short Circuit are now the outright leaders in division 1, (although UTas are equal leaders on win-loss record). Updated team lists are on the teams section of the Spring League web page. Division 1 games will be played under lights at the Rugby Field for the next couple of weeks at least - but there may be another change in venue later in the season. If you still want to play this league and are not on a team already, talk to League Organiser Jason de Puit. jase! Jase
October 22 We now have a confirmed field booking for Division 1 tonight from 7:15-8:45pm at the Rugby Field. Social League games will still be played at Sandown Park from 6:00-7:00pm.
October 21 There are some possible field changes for Division 1 of Spring League due to continuing problems with the lights at Sandown Park. This week's Division 1 games are likely to be held at the Rugby Field, with UTas, 4 lily, Foxtrot Hotel and Enforcers all playing in the 7:15-8:00pm time slot and Team 6 and Short Circuit playing from 8:00-8:45pm. Check your email (for tas-ultimate subscribers) or this website tomorrow for confirmation of these changes. Please note that Social League games will still be played at Sandown Park from 6:00-7:00pm. If you are playing both leagues, you may need to make your way from Sandown Park to the Rugby Fields in time for the 7.15 start.
October 16 After the first round of games in the Splendid Spring League, the early league leaders are Disc-o-techs in the social division and joint leaders Short Circuit and UTas in division 1. Updated team lists are on the teams section of the Spring League web page. If you still want to play this league and are not on a team already, talk to League Organiser Jason de Puit. jase! Jase
October 16 Congratulations to Shavawn Donoghue, Tania King, Ash Martens and ex-Tasmanian Mike Baker who all made the squad from which the Open, Women's and Mixed teams for the 2008 World Ultimate Championships in Vancouver will be selected to compete for Australia. 47 women and 52 men are included in the squad. Final selections for the Open and Women's teams will be made on January 29 and for the Mixed team on February 12.
October 15 Preliminary team lists are now available for both Social Division and Div 1 of the Splendid Spring League, which starts tonight at Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay: Social Division (6:00-7:00pm) and Div 1 (7:00-8:30pm). Each division now has 6 teams, which means Div 1 games will have early (7:00-7:45) and late (7:45-8:30) time slots. Team lists and schedules will be updated as the teams and schedules are updated in the next few days.
October 14 Congratulations to TD Matt Smith for organising the 9th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament with a record 7 teams. Murder ... of Ravens and Cap'n Flamin' Red Beard jointly took out the spirit prize. Ménage-a-dix Deux Chapeau overcame Flood of Ideas in the final to win the tournament with a score around 11-5. The Play of the Day award went to Dave Wilson for a spectacular defensive mac of the disc in the semi-final, preventing his player from getting the disc - unfortunately it was then caught by Joe, another player from the opposing team, for the score. Congratulations again to Dave Wilson (4 under) and Jens Meyer (3 under), respective winners of the skirt wearer and non-skirt wearer divisions in the Philip Redneck Ruddock Throw Them Overboard Disc Golf Classic on Friday evening. Congratulations also to Felix Kennedy, Kerryn Herman and Tim Phillips who were inducted to the Ten-Hat hall of Fame. More details and links to photos soon! Two-Hat VIII logo
October 9 Congratulations to LOG!, the Tasmanian team which came 15th in the Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships 2007 in Sydney. After losing their first 3 games, LOG! went on a winning spree which resulted in them being promoted up into the 9-16 bracket. A knockout loss against 7 Nation Army saw LOG! in the 13-16 bracket with the same three teams which they played in their opening pool on the first day of the tournament! The final game of the tournament saw LOG! become the first Tasmanian team to win a game against Wollongong at a National tournament, reversing the result from the first day's play.
October 8 Registration is almost full for the 9th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. If you register on line and pay your money by October 12, you avoid the on-the-day registration charges ($70). There have been some late withdrawals (due to injury) so there are still a handful of places left. Register now if you want to play! For those who haven't heard, the Two-Hat will move back to the Eastern shore again this year, at Wentworth Park, Howrah, to cater for the increase in teams. If you have already registered, you can check your registration details and check to see if your payment has been accepted. If you don't know how to pay, check out the payment details page. Recently updated post-registration Two-Hat information is also available, including details on the Philip Redneck Ruddock Throw Them Overboard Disc Golf Classic on the Friday night, the party venue and more. Two-Hat VIII logo
October 7 Congratulations to LOG!, the Tasmanian team which competed in the Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships 2007 in Sydney. LOG! were seeded 14th and finished with a ranking somewhere in the range 13-16, so very close to their seeding. Apart from losing their first two games to Cosa Nostra (NSW) and Honey Badgers (Vic) on the first day, other results are not yet available.
October 2 Registration has been officially capped at 8 teams and 80 players for the 9th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament and we have over 75 players registered currently. If you register after all the remaining places in the tournament have been taken, you will be placed on a wait list. If you have registered and can't play, please let Matt Smith know as soon as possible, to enable your spot to be used by others who may want to play! If you haven't paid yet, the very late registration charges now apply ($65). More information on the party venue and updated information for players will be available very soon. Two-Hat I logo

September

September 29 The University of Tasmania Ultimate team have been confirmed as officially finished in 5th place at the Australian University Games. Congratulations to the team for achieving the highest ever placing for a Tasmanian ultimate team playing in a National tournament. This is a fantastic result, and the whole team should be congratulated on an excellent performance. Hopefully this will spur on the Tasmanian Mixed team, LOG!, as they head off to the Mixed Nationals tournament, which kicks off next week. Rumour has it that Tania King and Ash Martens both made the Green and Gold honour team selected at AUG.
September 28 The University of Tasmania Ultimate team lost their quarterfinal (13-6) yesterday against the top seeds Macquarie University at the Australian University Games. However, the team bounced back this morning beating the University of Sydney 11-9. Their final match against ANU was the playoff for 5th and 6th place. Preliminary results suggest that UTas won this rematch with a score of 2-1, but this score seems a little low for a final score. Congratulations to the team for a sensational result!
September 27 The University of Tasmania Ultimate team has qualified for the quarter finals and a guaranteed top 8 result today at the Australian University Games, despite losing their last pool game to Monash (12-9) this morning. Yesterday's games saw three wins for the UTas team with an 11-6 scoreline against UWA (seeded 10th), 12-10 against Melbourne University (3rd) and 12-7 against the University of Ballarat (14th). This resulted in a 3 way tie for 3rd, 4th and 5th positions in the pool between ANU, UTas and the University of Melbourne and the points differential in games between these three teams saw UTas edge out Melbourne for 4th place in the pool. UTas now face the daunting task of playing defending champions and top seeds Macquarie University for a chance to make the top 4. The loser of this game will than play either UNSW or ANU for the right to the 5 v 6 playoff.
September 25 The University of Tasmania Ultimate team has had two losses to higher seeded teams today at the Australian University Games, going down 10-8 to the sixth seeds, ANU, and 15-9 to the second seeds, University of Queensland (9 points is the highest total scored against UQ so far). The UTas team will complete their pool games with three games on Wednesday, against UWA (seeded 10th), Melbourne University (3rd) and University of Ballarat (14th), followed by their final pool game against Monash (11th) on Thursday morning. The result of this final pool game may determine the team which makes it to the quarter finals.
September 24 Tomorrow night's TUA meeting will be held at a new venue, 3/177 Bathurst St, Hobart (it's the third house back from the street up the drive - they all look kinda the same). The agenda is available on the TUA meetings page. All welcome!
September 24 The University of Tasmania Ultimate team has started their campaign at the Australian University Games, being held this week on the Gold Coast. This team finished in 8th place in their first ever Australian University Games in 2007, and are seeded 7th this year. You can follow the progress of the team (and all other teams in the competition) by visiting Andrew Olennick's excellent live scores web site. In the first day of play the UTas team has 3 straight wins, defeating the 18th seeded La Trobe University 15-3, the 15th seeded (but underseeded) QUT, 10-8 and the 19th seeded Griffith University 15-2. Tomorrow's games will be much tougher, against ANU (seeded 6th) and the University of Queensland (seeded 2nd). Games on Wednesday see UTas playing the 3rd, 10th and 14th seeds and the 11th seeds on Thursday morning before proceeding to the knockout phases of the competition. Best of luck to the team!
September 20 If you are recruiting new players to the social division of the Splendid Spring League, (or if you are a new player yourself) don't forget to invite them along to the free "Come and Try" session from 6-7pm on Monday October 8 at Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay. This session will probably be followed by a pickup game or two, so div 1 players are also welcome to join in! Remember, this league will be split into two divisions when it starts on October 15: social division (6:00-7:00pm) and division 1 (7:00-8:30pm). A final decision on the number of teams is yet to be made, but numbers may be limited. To make it easier for the league organisers to run a great league, please register now and pay your fees if you want to play. Thanks to Jason de Puit and Masni Bennett for organising this league.
September 17 Registration is filling up rapidly for the 9th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. If you register on line and pay your money by September 30, you avoid the very late registration charges ($65). More importantly, registration maybe capped - so if you don't register soon, you may miss out completely! We now expect to have a record 8 teams at the Two-Hat this year, so register now if you want to be in it. Two-Hat VIII logo
September 15 A draft agenda for the next TUA committee meeting is now available on the TUA meetings page. The next TUA meeting will be held on Tuesday September 25, 5:30pm, probably at 70 Hampden Road Battery Point. All welcome!

September 10 Registration is now open for the Splendid Spring League which will start on Monday October 15 at Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay. This league will be split into two divisions: social division (6:00-7:00pm) and division 1 (7:00-8:30pm). A final decision on the number of teams is yet to be made, but numbers may be limited. To make it easier for the league organisers to run a great league, please register now and pay your fees if you want to play. Don't forget to invite your non-ultimate playing friends and colleagues to try social league too! Thanks to Jason de Puit and Masni Bennett for organising this league.

August 7 Registration is now officially open for the 9th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. If you register on line and pay your money by August 31, you qualify for the early registration discount! This year registration jumps from $45 to $60 on September 1 - so you may want to think hard about registering and paying by August 31. We are expecting to have a record 6 teams at the Two-Hat this year, so register now if you want to be in it. Two-Hat VIII logo
August 6 A draft agenda for the next TUA committee meeting is now available on the TUA meetings page, along with minutes of the July 31 meeting. The next TUA meeting will be held on Tuesday August 28, 5:30pm, probably at 70 Hampden Road Battery Point. All welcome!
August 2 After the third week of the Winter Indoor League, FH have taken over the lead in the league table from Just Lean. Both teams have 2 wins and a tie. Full team lists and a modified (twice) schedule of games are now available on the Winter Indoor League web page. If you still want to play this league and are not on a team already, talk to League Organiser Basil van Riet.
August 1 The TUA has been allocated a place for one team from Tasmania at Mixed Nationals in 2007. There is a slim chance of an additional place for a second Tasmanian team being allocated as part of a wildcard process, but this seems very unlikely. In any event, any teams selected to represent Tasmania at Mixed Nationals will be determined by the TUA by a selection process, rather than through holding a qualifying tournament.

July

July 27 A draft agenda for the next TUA committee meeting is now available on the TUA meetings page. The next TUA meeting will be held on Tuesday July 31, 5:30pm, at 70 Hampden Road Battery Point. All welcome!
July 24 Sunday afternoon training sessions are about to begin for the Tasmanian team going to Mixed Nationals in Sydney in October. As spaces will be limited in this tournament and there appears to be a lot of interest, it is likely that selections will be held to choose this team. If you are interested in trying out for this team, get in touch with Shavawn Donoghue and turn up to training from 3-5pm on Sundays at the Rugby Field or maybe the Uni Oval. The University of Tasmania squad will also be training for the Australian University Games to be held in the Gold Coast in September at the same time and location - so if you need a fix of high level ultimate, come along.
July 21 After one week, Just Lean have taken the early lead in the league table for the Winter Indoor League. If you still want to play this league and are not on a team already, talk to League Organiser Basil van Riet.
July 20 The Winter Indoor League has started (on Wednesday evenings at the Hobart College Sports Hall, Mt Nelson) with a slight problem with one court being double booked on the first evening. Hopefully these issues will be sorted out soon. Look out on tas-ultimate for an announcement and a revised schedule of games shortly. If you are not already subscribed to this email list, check out the subscription instructions - this list is set up so you can subscribe and unsubscribe all by your selves! A preliminary team list and schedule has already been emailed to this list, so if you want to know what is happening with this league, join up today.
July 4 Minutes of the July 3 TUA meeting are now available on the TUA meetings page. The next TUA meeting will be held on Tuesday July 31, 5:30pm, probably at 70 Hampden Road Battery Point. All welcome!

June

June 19 In an icy finish to the Autumn Social League, Red Alert took out the spirit victory (by one point) and Icy Fingers won the league, defeating Red Alert 9-3 in the grand final. The Guts in the final award went to Gifford Wong, the Style in the final award was won by Stella Foley, Shelly Slater won the best recruiter award and the most improved player prize was shared by Eliza Burke and Philip Munday. Thanks to Dave Cooke for running this league!
June 18 Registration is now open for the Winter Indoor League which will start on Wednesday July 18 at the Hobart College Sports Hall, Mt Nelson. While a final decision on format and the number of teams is yet to be made, numbers may be limited, so if you want to play, register now and pay your money! At the bare minimum there will be 4 teams - but if there is sufficient interest this league could expand to 6 or even 8 teams. To make it easier to make this decision in time to organise and start the league on July 18, please register now if you want to play. Thanks to Basil van Riet for organising this league (with some help from John Kristensen).
June 14 The final round of minor round games saw Blue Goats Cheese get their first win against previous league leaders Icy Fingers. This allowed Red Alert to finish on the top of the ladder at the completion of the minor round games in the Autumn Social League. The semi finals (6:10pm) will feature Red Alert vs Blue Goats Cheese on the Law field and Icy Fingers vs Disc-o-techs on the Hedge field. The semifinals will be followed by prizes being awarded for the spirit winners, the best recruiter and the most improved beginner, followed by the grand final starting at 7:30pm and a social gathering at the Customs House Hotel afterwards.
June 3 The top of the league table for the Autumn Social League has been shaken up again with the undefeated Icy Fingers taking over from Red Alert and only 1 point separating the top three teams.

May

May 28 At the half way point of the season, Red Alert have taken over at the top of the league table from Disc-o-techs for the Autumn Social League, but only 2 points separate the top three teams. For those hanging out for Winter Indoor League, it looks like this league will start in the middle of July, probably on Wednesday evenings at the Hobart College Sports Hall, Mt Nelson. Further information will appear here in due course.
May 17 Disc-o-techs have taken the early lead in the league table for the Autumn Social League. The league looks like it is fully subscribed, but if you are really keen to register, talk to League Organiser Dave Cooke.
May 2 Registration is almost full for the Autumn Social League which will start officially on Monday May 7. All games will be played at the Uni Oval, Sandy Bay. If you still want to register - talk to League Organiser Dave Cooke before registering - to check to see if there is still space left on a team.
May 1 Minutes of the March 29 TUA meeting and TUA AGM are now available on the TUA meetings page. The next TUA meeting will be held on Thursday May 24, 5:30pm at the Welcome Stranger, 58 Harrington St, Hobart (corner of Harrington and Davey Streets). All welcome!

April

April 30 147 new photos featuring Tasmanians at Nationals in 2007 can now be found on JK's Tasmanian ultimate photo gallery. Check them out. Note that Wednesday evening training session are no longer happening for Bush or the Tassie Tiggers - Nationals is over! TiggersBush
April 27 Bush won their last game at Nationals, beating Primal 14-9 and finishing in 11th position, 2 places above their seeding. Furthermore, the Tassie Tiggers won the Spirit of the game award in the open division. Congratulations to both teams!
April 27 Registration is still open for the Autumn Social League which will start this Monday, April 30, with a Learn to Play session, with the league starting officially on Monday May 7. All games will be played at the Uni Oval, Sandy Bay. Numbers are strictly limited, and currently there are only reserve list places still available for men, as the provisional cap on male places has just been reached! However there are still a number of places available for women. If we don't reach the female player cap by April 29th, any men on the reserve list will be registered, provided that they pay by May 5th. The late fee will be waived until that date for players on the reserve list. Remember any (late) fees paid after April 19 will cost $50!
April 26 The fourth day of the Australian Ultimate Championships saw the Tiggers finish in 16th position, losing their last game to Thor 9-15. Heads of State (featuring ex-Tigger Ash Button) finished in 7th place, Fyshwick United Gentleman's club (featuring ex-Tiggers Ian Warren and Asher Gentle) finished in 9th place and Barefoot (featuring ex-Tiggers captain Mike Baker) finished in 4th place. Teams that did much better than their seeding included Sublime finished in 6th place (seeded 11), Karma, finishing in 10th place (seeded 15) and in the women's competition Ishtar finished in 5th place (seeded 10). Bush had a strong win against Wollongong (15-3) in the first game, followed by a loss to Honey (5-14). The result of the Bush vs Primal game is yet to be announced.
April 25 The third day of the Australian Ultimate Championships has seen Bush start with a strong win against Wollongong (15-3) in the first game, followed by a loss to Honey (5-14), followed by a narrow loss to Sultry Dazzle (11-13). Bush will see now play Primal (5th seed) for 11th and 12th positions. The Tiggers start strongly against Karma - they were leading 3-2 early on - before "falling asleep" in this game and losing the game 4-15, followed by a loss against Manly (4-15), relegating the Tiggers to playing Thor on the last day for 15th position.
April 24 The second day of the Australian Ultimate Championships is over and it was a tough day for the Tiggers, with losses to both Canberra teams (15-1 and 15-5) The Tiggers next play Karma (who have already beaten both ACT teams). If the Tiggers lose this game they will then be playing for 13th position. Bush fared better with a 10-7 win against Indies followed by a 10-9 loss against Bra (from Canberra). The last game for Bush in Pool U is against Wollongong and if Bush win this game then Bush will finish somewhere between 5th and 12th.
April 23 The first day of the Australian Ultimate Championships is over and there are mixed fortunes for the Tasmanian teams. The Tassie women's team, Bush, started with a creditable 8-13 loss to Wildcard, the second seed, and won their second game 10-6 against Sultry Razzle from Queensland. Bush's next three games are in Pool U against Indies (seed 14 from Adelaide), Bra (seed 7 from Canberra) and Wollongong (seed 8). Bush can still finish as high as 5th place, if they win the right games! The big movers in the women's draw are Ishtar (seed 10) from Melbourne who have moved up into the top 6. The Tassie Tiggers had 3 losses on the first day with all three games going to seeding: 0-15 to Fakulti R (seed 4), 2-15 to Chilly (seed 1) and 4-15 to Manly (seed 13). This places the Tiggers in Pool I, along with Karma (seed 15), Fyshwick United Gentlemen's Club (Canberra A team, seeded 8, featuring ex-Tiggers Ian Warren and Asher Gentle) and Fyshwick United Man Team (Canberra B team, seeded 9). Karma have been playing very well, reversing their 3rd vs 4th place ranking loss in Southern Regionals by soundly defeating Hot Chilly 15-5, and with respectable 7-15 and 9-15 losses to the second and third seeds - so the Tiggers looks to have more difficult games ahead. The movers in the Open draw are Sublime (seed 11) from WA who have moved into the top 8. For more detail, check out Andrew Olennick's live scores page.
April 17 Registration is now open for the Autumn Social League which will start on Monday April 30 with a Learn to Play session, with the league starting officially on Monday May 7. All games will be played at the Uni Oval, Sandy Bay. Numbers will be strictly limited, just like last year, so if you want to play, register now and pay your money! Once the initial registrations fill up, players will be placed on a reserve list - but there is no guarantee that these players will get to play.
April 13 The current season of A-League has been cut short with league leaders Hobart Hurricane declared the Summer A-League winners. The remainder of the league has turned into a series of practice matches for Bush and the Tassie Tiggers to help them with their preparations in the lead up to Nationals. The existing A-League is likely to be restructured in the near future. The next TUA Spring League will probably have two divisions played on the same night, replacing A-League and B-League games which were previously played on different days. Interim arrangements for a winter weekend game/A-League/TUC will be announced here in due course.
April 11 Autumn league will be played as a social outdoor league this year once again, almost certainly starting on Monday April 30 at the Rugby Field, Sandy Bay. Numbers will be limited, just like last year. Watch out for an announcement on registration very soon, probably opening soon after April 16.
April 5 Congratulations and good luck to Bush and the Tassie Tiggers who will be representing Tasmania in the women's and open divisions respectively at the Australian Ultimate Championships to be held at La Trobe University, Melbourne later in April. Training continues for these two teams on Wednesday evenings. Both teams qualified with wild card entries. The Tiggers are seeded 16th (out of 16 teams) and Bush are seeded 13th out of 14 teams.

March

March 30 A well attended TUA AGM has been just been held. Jemery Day and Shavawn Donoghue were re-elected as President and Treasurer respectively. Thanks to Mike Baker and Tim Phillips, for their contributions as Secretary and Vice-president respectively and congratulations to John Kristensen and Joe Boyer who are the newly elected Vice-president and Secretary. Signed copies of the audited 2006 financial statements and a copy of the 2006 TUA President's report are now available at the TUA meetings page.
March 13 There are a range of new photos recently uploaded to JK's Tasmanian ultimate photo gallery, including 12 photos from the recently completed Hobart Summer League and 40 photos from the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships, mostly featuring players from Bush and from the Tassie Tiggers. Check them out! Bush have secured a wildcard entry to the Australian Ultimate Championships to be held in Melbourne in April. The Tassie Tiggers are still waiting to see if they will receive a wildcard entry.

March 13 Thanks to Matt Smith for running another successful Hobart Summer Social League. Congratulations to spirit winners Menzies and league winners Sir Stacks-a-lot, who beat Nerg 9-8 in a tight final. Congratulations also to the various award winners: Rowena Zwart for winning the most improved female; Mani Thom for most improved male; Sarah Robinson for winning the style in the final; and Aaron Pinkus for winning the guts in the final. A full league organisers report will follow in due course.
March 12 The Southern Australian Ultimate Championships are now over. Full results will be available in due course, but in the mean time, the final ranking for the women's teams is: 1. Team Box; 2. Honey; 3. Ishtar; 4. Bush; 5. Indie and for the open teams: 1. Hot Chilly; 2. Heads of State; 3. Sweet Chilly; 4. Karma; 5. Tassie Tiggers; 6. Discheads. Spirit winners were Bush and Discheads. Thanks to Ash Martens for all her work as TD.

March 9 The final draw, seedings, game schedule, golf instructions, party details and more are now available on the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships website. This draw is almost identical to the AFDA standard draw - the only (cosmetic) change is that the playoff games for 3rd place and lower start at 2pm rather than 3pm. The first round of games for both women's and open teams, will definitely start at 9:30am on Saturday. For those who are in Hobart on Friday night, there will be drinks at Knoppies on Friday from 6pm followed by a round or two of disc golf in St David's Park (ultrastars only) a little while later, one round starting at 7pm and another at 10:00pm!
March 8 After some discussion, it seems the draw for the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships is almost finalised. The proposed draw (possibly already approved by the AFDA?) for all regional tournaments is now available (in excel format only unfortunately) and it seems like this is the draw that will be used this weekend. Likely seeding for the women's teams is: 1. Ishtar; 2. Team Box; 3. Honey; 4. Indie; 5. Bush. Similarly for the mens team the seeding is likely to be: 1. Hot Chilly; 2. Heads of State; 3. Sweet Chilly; 4. Karma; 5. Discheads; 6. Tassie Tiggers. The first round of games for both women's and open teams, will probably start at 9:30am on Saturday. For those who are in Hobart on Friday night, there will probably be drinks at Knoppies on Friday from 6pm followed by a round or two of disc golf in St David's Park (ultrastars only) a little while later, maybe around 7pm - although rounds shouldn't really start until it is dark! Hopefully the official tourney web site will be updated soon - with a definitive decision on the draw, the seedings, the game schedule and everything else!
March 6 After the completion of all minor round games in the Hobart Summer League, Sir Stacks-a-lot have taken out the minor premiership. The final league table, at the end of the minor round games, means that Sir Stacks-a-lot meet Disc-o-techs in one semi-final while Nerg and Ultima meet in the other. Unfortunately for them Menzies miss the finals this year. Remember there is a barbecue after the finals and various prizes and awards to be given out on Monday March 12. Look out here for an announcement on Autumn social league soon!
March 5 Hobart Hurricane have a strong lead in the league table after 6 rounds of the Sunday afternoon A-League. There is no A-League game on this weekend due to the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships being held in Hobart - check out the plans for the rest of this season after this weekend.
March 1 A dedicated web site has now been set up for the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships, complete with maps to get you to the fields and all the other information you could possibly want to know. This tournament will be held on March 10 and 11 at Wentworth Park, Howrah. So far 5 women's teams and 6 open teams have registered and paid their fees. If any other teams want to enter this tournament (a qualifying tournament for the 2007 Australian Ultimate Championships) get in touch with TD Ash Martens soon!

February

February 28 With only one more week of minor round games, Sir Stacks-a-lot have taken over from Nerg at the top of the league table, with two crushing defeats this week in the Hobart Summer League. Menzies also recorded their first win for the season! The full minor round schedule and the format for the finals is also now available, so you can check to see if your team has a bye before you play.
February 27 Shavawn It may have been some time coming, but a range of photos from the 18th Melbourne Hat are now available on JK's TUA photo gallery. Might be worth checking out how green the grass is in these photos and compare it to the colour of the grass in Tasmania. Seven Tasmanians attended this Melbourne Hat in December 2006 and 4 of them made it to the semi-finals! Fly JK
February 26 Hobart Hurricane have taken the lead and look like strong candidates for the minor premiership with a 6 point buffer in the league table in the Sunday afternoon A-League. This is a 3 team league, with intermittent breaks so check the game schedule to see if your team is playing each week. There may be changes to the schedule following the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships - and there is a suggestion to move this league to a weeknight later in the year (along with some other structural changes).
February 26 With only two more weeks of minor round games, Nerg are still at the top of the league table in the Hobart Summer League. The full minor round schedule has been updated and the finals format is also now available, so check to see when your team has a bye before you play!
February 24 The official TD's report for the 8th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament is now available, including photos and full results of the tournament. The Two-Hat history page has been also been updated - Shavawn's record in being a member of the spirit winning team 5 times is particularly notable - especially given that this award has only been made for the last 6 Two-Hats. The Two-Hat photo page also has links to photos. Two-Hat VIII logo
February 23 Fees are due today for players wanting to play in the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships, to be held on March 10 and 11 at Wentworth Park, Howrah. Looks like there will be 5 women's teams and 6 open teams. If you don't get your money in today, your players will be paying $60 each!
February 13 After two complete rounds of games, Nerg are still at the top of the league table in the Hobart Summer League, but only 3 points separate the top 3 teams.
February 8 Minutes of the January 23 TUA meeting are now available on the TUA meetings page. The next TUA meeting will be held on Thursday February 22, 5:30pm at Shippies, Battery Point, out the back in the beer garden. The most important agenda item is an update on the plans for the Southern Regional Championships, and some issues relating to Monday social league (drop in registrations, recent tendency towards more competitive games). All welcome!
February 7 Nerg have consolidated their position at the top of the league table after 4 weeks of games in the Hobart Summer League, but they have played one more game than their nearest rivals. The game schedule, at least through to the end of February, is now available, so you can check to see when your team's bye is scheduled.
February 5 The Southern Confederates have taken the lead in the league table after the first complete round of games in the A-League. This is a 3 team league, with intermittent breaks so check the game schedule to see if your team is playing each week.
February 1 Deadlines have now been set for registration for the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships, to be held on March 10 and 11 at Wentworth Park, Howrah. Individual player fees are set at $45, as long as you pay by February 23 - one payment per team please (via the team captain), and captains can register your teams here. If you miss this deadline, registration will cost $60 per player! Training for all Tasmanian teams (both open and women's teams) is now being held on Wednesday evenings from 6pm at the Rugby Field. If you want to play on the Women's team, talk to Ash Martens or Shavawn Donoghue. If you wish to play on an open team, talk to John Kristensen (JK). If you can help with the organisation of this tourney, please talk to TD Ash Martens! Tiggers

January

January 31 With two losses in week 3, previous league leaders Ultima slip down to 3rd position in the league table, with Nerg taking over the top spot in front of Sir Stacks-a-lot in the Hobart Summer League. The full schedule is still a secret, but will hopefully be available on the web soon, so you can check to see when your team's bye is scheduled. Remember, if you haven't paid your league fees, you have no insurance coverage and you won't be allowed to play!
January 29 After the first two weeks, Ultima remain league leaders in the Hobart Summer League. This league has now settled down with 5 full teams, which means two teams have a bye each week - one bye in each time slot. The full schedule will be available on the web soon, so you can check to see when your bye is. Full results and league table are now available. Exact details are still to be confirmed, but the finals will almost certainly be held at Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay on Monday March 12, with a BBQ and presentations at the nearby park straight after the finals. Remember, if you haven't paid your league fees, you have no insurance coverage and you won't be allowed to play!
January 11 The TUA has successfully bid to host the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships, to be held on March 10 and 11 at Wentworth Park, Howrah with Ash Martens as TD. This will be the largest ultimate tournament ever held in Hobart with at least 11 teams playing in two divisions; open and women. Teams competing in this tournament will come from South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania and this is a qualifying tournament for the 2007 Australian Ultimate Championships which will be held in Melbourne in April. We expect to have three Hobart based teams entering this tournament. Training for the two open teams is being held on Wednesday evenings from 6pm at the Rugby Field and for the women's team from 6pm on Thursday evenings. If you want to play on the Women's team, talk to Ash Martens or Shavawn Donoghue. If you wish to play on an open team, talk to John Kristensen (JK). Sunday afternoon training sessions may also be held soon. If you want to help run the tourney, please talk to Ash! Tiggers
January 9 The opening game in the 2007 Summer A-League will be played on Saturday at 5:30pm at the Rugby Field, Sandy Bay, to enable cricket fans to go to the cricket on Sunday instead. Note the change of time and day for this first game only. Registration is still open if you want to play in this league. The regular timeslot for A-League games is Sunday afternoons between 4:00 and 6:00pm (?), with games played on most Sundays from January 21 to April 22 at the Rugby Field, Sandy Bay. This is a 3 team league, so check the game schedule to see if your team is playing each week. Thanks to Aaron Pinkus for organising this league. Aaron
January 8 The first games in the Hobart Summer Social League have been played, however numbers have been down a little on last year. Unless there are a large number of new registrations in the next week or so, this league will only feature 4 teams. With another 8 to 10 players, we can proceed with 6 teams playing on 3 fields and have a little more variety in the teams we play each week. Games are played on Monday evenings between 5:30 and 8:00pm from now until Monday March 12 at Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay. Remember, if you haven't paid your league fees, you have no insurance coverage and you won't be allowed to play! Thanks to Matt Smith for organising this league. Matt
