Commiserations to JK (whose team came second) and Matt Smith, whose team only made the semi-finals this year (this is the only time Matt's Melbourne Hat team has not played in the final!). Three other Tasmanians attended the Hat (and didn't make the semi-finals) and there were another 250+ players from other places.

After 2 weeks of the Hobart Spring Outdoor Social B-League Menzies have retained their lead in the B-League table. However, there will be a top of the league clash featuring the two unbeaten teams, Menzies and Good Question next week. Hopefully Frank Toman will have a speedy recovery after he dislocated a shoulder this week! Frank's shoulder was "relocated" in hospital after league.
|
| October 18 |
The first games in the Hobart Spring Outdoor Social B-League have been played! If you haven't registered yet and want to play, you may want to talk to John Kristensen or Tim Johnson before you do so, to make sure that there are still places available.

After a narrow 11-10 loss to Adelaide University in their last game on Thursday afternoon, the University of Tasmania team now faces the ANU in a playoff to determine 7th and 8th places at the Australian University Games. In breaking news, the ANU won this final game - but that still leaves the University of Tasmania team finishing in 8th position overall - 6 places higher than their seeding. Congratulations to the team for this excellent result - especially considering that this is the first University of Tasmania team to compete at the Australian University Games.
|
| September 28 |
The University of Tasmania Ultimate team is currently competing in the Australian University Games being held at Flinders University in Adelaide from September 24-29. Despite being seeded in 14th place (out of 17 teams), the Tassie team has already made it to the quarter finals and have ensured a top 8 finish. The UTas team finished in 4th place in their pool of 8 teams and in the process beat teams seeded 3 (UNSW), 10 (Ballarat), 11 (UWA) and 17 (Flinders B). UTas then faced the top team from Pool A, the pre-tournament hot favourites Macquarie University, in a quarterfinal game and lost this game 14-3. The next two ranking games will decide the UTas team's final position, which will be somewhere between 5th and 8th and with the next opponent for UTas being Adelaide University. Results can either be followed on Andrew Olennick's website or are available on the AUS website, as is the current ladder.

Congratulations to Ashley Button who has just finished playing with the Australian junior open team at the World Junior Ultimate Championships in Boston, August 2006. The Australian Junior Open team finished 4th overall and more importantly retained the coveted spirit of the game award. The team were disappointed not to come home with a medal, losing 13-12 to Colombia in the playoff for 3rd vs 4th, having beaten the Colombian team during pool play - but they improved dramatically on their 7th placed finish at the 2004 junior world championships. The Junior Women also won the spirit of the game award and improved on their 2004 placing (6th) by finishing in 3rd place! More information can be found on the AFDA home page and on the aus-ultimate yahoo group.

As part of their build up to to the Southern University Games in Ballarat from July 2-5, the University have issued a challenge (the workers were too busy slaving away to find time to issue one). The next Uni vs Workers' Party Challenge game scheduled for 6:00-7:30pm on Monday 26 under lights at the Uni Oval. Talk to Mike if you want to play for the Uni and Tim if you want to play for the workers. Bring a red shirt (well white may be better to distinguish the teams under lights) for the revolutionaries and a black shirt for the Uni team. Following the game, the UTas SUG team's raffle will be drawn. So if you still wish to buy a ticket either come and see someone from the team at their regular Sunday afternoon training session before the A-League game, or see Ash or Mike at the Challenge.

|
| June 13 |
There were no changes to the league table in the last round of the Hobart Autumn Social B-League, despite the top team, Colony forfeiting their last minor round game of the season. This forfeit enabled second placed Vitamin C to draw level with Colony on points, with their one point victory over Chorlophiliacts. However, using the standard tie breaking procedure (for ultimate), which looks at head to head results before goal difference, Colony finished as minor premiers. As a result, the semi-finals on June 19 will feature Colony vs Disc-o-techs in one semi final and Vitamin C vs Chorlophiliacts in the other, with the winners going through to the grand final, to be played straight after the semi finals at 7pm. The Uni club rooms will be open during the finals with a BBQ during the grand final, followed by awards and presentations. Please let Dave Cooke know if you will be at the BBQ and if you can bring a salad!
|
| June 12 |
After two games in the Winter A-League, Hobart Hurricane are languishing at the bottom of the A-League table, with two losses out of two games. The next game sees the completion of the first complete round of games, with the Southern Confederates playing the Northern Bogans to determine who takes the early lead in the ladder. Talk to Aaron if you want to play in this league.
|
| June 10 |
Good luck to the University of Tasmania Ultimate team which is going to the Southern University Games in Ballarat from July 2-5. This is a qualifying tournament for the Australian University Games which are to be held in Adelaide in September. This is the first ultimate team from the University of Tasmania to play in University Games of any form, so if you want to help them get there talk to Ash Martens about buying a raffle ticket (prizes include a a weekend away for 2 at Doherty St Helens and a gift voucher from Blundstones)!
|
| June 7 |
On Friday June 2, ABC Stateline featured 4 minutes and 4 seconds of Tas Ultimate and in particular of Ash Button who will be playing for Australia in the World Junior Ultimate Championships in Boston, August 2006. Round 5 of Hobart Autumn Social B-League has set things up nicely for a tough game between Chorlophiliacts and Vitamin C next week, as they vie for 2nd spot in the league table. The Spirit contest is still anybody's, so expect to see some of the fast and fair play that has won spirit prizes for Tassie in the national arena!
|
| May 31 |
Rumour has it that there will be an indoor Winter Social B-League this year after all, probably starting some time in July. Details are yet to be finalised, but look out for an announcement here soon!
|
| May 30 |
Registration is still open for the Winter A-League to be played on Sunday afternoons 3:50-5:30pm from Sunday June 4th, but the earlybird discount has now passed! Despite rumours to the contrary, this league will be starting as scheduled on Sunday June 4 with the first game between Hobart Hurricane and the Southern Confederates on the Rugby Field, with all future games bing held at the Uni Oval.
Because we are booking fields and paying for lights, registering for A-League costs, and if you haven't already registered and paid - you are now facing the prospect of paying late registration fees! Talk to Aaron if you want to play in this league.

The Southern Confederates have won the first Hobart A-League grand final taking their first victory of the season against the minor premiers, the Northern Bogans with a final score of 17-10. The Southern Confederates started very strongly, taking the first half 9-1, before the Northern Bogans stepped it up a notch, outscoring the Confederates in the second half. The spirit prize was also shared by these two teams. Aaron's league organiser's report is now available through the League History page. Congratulations to Michael Dunne and Stan Robert for winning the Style in the final and Guts in the final awards and to Rowan Miller for winning the most improved award. Thanks to Aaron Pinkus for running this inaugural A-League.

Registration is now open for the Winter A-League to be played on Sunday afternoons 3:50-5:30pm from Sunday June 4th! We hope to maintain the same three regionally based teams which have already been playing A-League. If you want to get the earlybird discount (and make Aaron's life easier) register now, and make sure you pay your money (either electronically or give cash to Aaron) by May 29!

Following the May 11 committee meeting, the TUA has a position vacant - league organiser for the traditional indoor Winter social league. If anyone is interested in taking on this role (we can provide plenty of advice and support) please get in touch with one of the TUA committee (Jemery, Shavawn, Dave Cooke,...). If we can't fill this position, then the Hobart social B-League may go in to recess from June 19 until sometime in October, when Spring League kicks off.
|

Vitamin C are the early league leaders after the first week of the Hobart Autumn Social B-League. Talk to Dave Cooke quickly if you haven't yet registered and you still want to play this league!
|
| May 9 |
The Northern Bogans have booked their place in the finals of the A-League, alongside the Southern Confederates by winning the last A-League game of the minor round with a decisive 17-10 victory over the Southern Confederates. The grand final will be played between the minor premiers, the Northern Bogans, and the Southern Confederates and on Sunday May 21 starting at 3:15pm and finishing at 5pm. Hobart Hurricane's forfeit last week has proved quite costly, resulting in them missing out on the grand final.
|
|
| May 2 |
Registration is now closed for the Hobart Autumn Social B-League to be played on Monday evenings 6-7pm from Monday May 8th, as the last place has now been taken. However, there is still the option of being placed on the reserve list. A few people who registered have yet to confirm this registration by paying - and if they don't pay soon, these places will be offered to players from the top of the reserve list - first in best dressed! If you want to guarantee your place, make sure you pay your money! Look out for Dave Cooke if you want to pay your rego in cash! In addition to the usual rules, playing in cleated shoes is compulsory in this league. Suitable footwear includes grass cats (touch footy shoes), or even better, given the conditions we expect at this time of year, soccer boots or football boots. Note that exposed metal on your cleats is strictly forbidden - so check those old rugby boots before using them! Preliminary team lists and full minor round schedule are also available.
|
|
| May 1 |
The Southern Confederates have booked their place in the finals of the A-League by winning the last A-League game by forfeit over Hobart Hurricane on a wet Sunday afternoon. The remaining minor round game will be played between the Southern Confederates and the Northern Bogans on Sunday May 7 starting at 3:15pm and finishing at 5pm (Note new starting time to allow the game to be played without using lights!). To qualify for the grand final, the Northern Bogans need to win this game. Any other result will see Hobart Hurricane playing the Southern Confederates in the grand final on May 21.

Full rankings from the Australian Ultimate Championships are now available (but still with little commentary). Congratulations to Mike Baker for winning the Men's Most Valuable Player award (as he did last year!), to the Tiggers for improving their seeding by 3 places, and (as also happened last year) improving their ranking in relation to teams from the Southern region compared to the ranking after the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships. Considering only the Southern teams, the Tiggers were 3rd at Nationals and 6th at Regionals this year, compared to last years 2nd at Nationals and 4th at Regionals. Also noteworthy that the Tiggers beat the team that finished 13th this year (in 2003 the Tiggers came 12th but managed to beat the team that finished 9th in the process). Congrats also to Shavawn Donoghue and Ash Martens and Southside who came 4th in the Women's division, and to ex-Tigger Alice Hill whose team Oma Rapiti (NZ) came 5th in the Women's division. Hopefully those with injuries (including Dave Cooke and Felix) and aching muscles will make speedy recoveries.
|
|
| April 26 |
According to Aaron the Tassie Tiggers finished in 15th place at Nationals, improving 3 places on their seeding - and they did beat Newcastle on Saturday! Unfortunately Felix dislocated his shoulder during this game and spent some hours in hospital in Sydney. Hope you feel a bit better now Felix. More news when it comes to hand...

According to the latest Trash Talk article the Tassie Tiggers were due to play off against '74 Flood for 15th and 16th place at Nationals. So even if the Tiggers did beat Newcastle on the first day (still not confirmed), Newcastle finished higher than the Tiggers. With teams from Newcastle and Wollongong playing off for 13th and 14th position, it looks like the old rivalry between the Tiggers, and Newcastle and Wollongong has been reignited. In any case, well done to the Tiggers who have improved at least two places on their seeding (they were seeded 18th), and have finished above the teams seeded 9th and 10th. In the Women's division, Southside faced a tough semi-final against Ishtar. All these games have been played now, of course, but the results are still to be released to the mainstream media!

News of the Australian Ultimate Championships seems a little scarce, or at least news relating to the Tassie Tiggers, but it seems that they lost to Fakulti P (seeded 3), and they only managed to take score one point in their game against the current National Champions and first seeds, Sweet Chilly. Rumour has it that the Tiggers also went down to the Eastern Greys, 14-8 and also lost to Sublime, 17-8, in cross over games on day 2. If Discheads finished fifth in Pool N, which seems the most likely result, given other known results in that pool, this means that the Tiggers must have beaten Newcastle on Saturday to finish 3rd in Pool K! OK there is a fair bit of speculation involved in drawing this conclusion - but Piers could report a little more detail on games from the other end of the draw! Piers does deserve to be thanked for posting all the results and news used to draw these shaky conclusions... News from the Women's division is that Southside (seeded 3rd) lost to Ishtar (seeded 2nd) in their game on day 1. Was this the first game that Ash Martens has lost at Nationals? The only other known results involving Southside saw them victorious in games against Sultry and Phoenix - so it looks like Southside finished 2nd in Pool E, which means they still have a chance of playing in the final.

| April 21 |
Good luck to Ash Martens and Shavawn Donoghue, who will be playing for Southside in the Women's division of the Australian Ultimate Championships in Sydney this weekend. Southside is the Tasmanian women's team (well close enough, they have a few pickups from Sydney as well!) and this team has won the Women's division at Nationals for the last two years running. Good luck also to the Tassie Tiggers, who will be playing in the Open division!

There will be one more Wednesday night game featuring the Tassie Tiggers vs the Best of the Rest on Wednesday April 19 from 6pm at the Uni Oval. The Tiggers head to Sydney in a week to play in the Australian Ultimate Championships, and this will be the last chance for the Tiggers to get some all important game practice. If you think you are good enough to give the Tiggers a hard game, then contact Tiggers captain Mike Baker for more information on this game. Meanwhile a team photo and a report on the Tiggers experiences at the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships is now available on the Tasmanian Representative Teams page (although you will need to scroll to the bottom of the page to find the right link. The Tassie Tiggers team at Nationals consists of Aaron Pinkus, Basil van Riet, Dave Cooke, Felix Kennedy, John Kristensen, Matt Petrie, Matt Smith, Mike Baker (captain), Tim Johnson, Tory Fitchett, Tom Caldwell and Warwick Reed. If you can come earlier (from 4:00pm) to provide background colour, that would be great, as ABC's Stateline will be doing a feature on Ashley Button and his selection on the Australian team.

Congratulations to Ashley Button who has just been selected in the Australian junior open team. This team will represent Australia at the World Junior Ultimate Championships in Boston, August 2006. As far as we can tell, Ashley is the first Tasmanian resident to be selected to represent Australia at any World Ultimate Championships - although expatriate Tasmanians have been selected to play for Australia in the past. Ashley's fundraising campaign is continuing, to enable him to attend to get to Worlds - if you want to help out, please get in touch with Ashley directly. Rumour has it that there will be more chocolate sales.

The newly named Hobart Hurricane beat the Northern Bogans 15-7 in the latest A-League game, and this victory saw them retain their place at the top of the A-League ladder. The next A-League game will be between the Confederates and the Bogans on Sunday April 30 (Note modified date to avoid Easter), starting at 3:50pm, probably at the Uni Oval (given that the Rugby Field may still be closed!). Talk to Aaron if you want to get on a team for this competition.

After the finals of the Hobart Summer League, :"e"-funf won the all important spirit prize and Carrot Cake won the League, beating Menzies 7-3, or thereabouts, in the grand final. The semi-finals were both closely contested games, with Menzies beating :"e"-funf 5-4 after time cap, with a very long deciding point. Carrot Cake were pushed hard by the Black Cats in the other semi final, but finished strongly to come from behind and win 6-3 (probable score). Congratulations to Pat Dunne for wining the best recruiter prize, Jo Hall and Jerome Stahl for winning the most improved beginners awards, Lyla Goldstein for winning the style in the final award, Ashley Button for winning the Guts in the final and Mike Baker for winning the Gratuitous in the final award (for his 3 metre travel!). Thanks to Matt Smith for running the biggest league ever in Hobart and to all those who helped out with the BBQ! This means that a minimum of 12 spots are reserved for women on the registration list and a maximum of 36 male pre-registrations will be allowed. Late male registrations will be placed on a reserve list and will be allocated to any free women's spots if there are less than 12 female registrations in the week prior to 1st game. Congratulations to the Tassie Tiggers who finished 6th in the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships, enabling them to qualify to play in the Australian Ultimate Championships in Sydney in April! While the draw seemed a little strange and details of the tourney are still a little sketchy, the best report of this tournament so far (with complete final ranking) seems to be on the VFDA web site.

With only 1 more week of minor round games in the Hobart Summer League, Carrot Cake are now confirmed as winners of the minor premiership with a 9 point lead in the league table. However, the fight for minor placings remains fierce, with still only 4 points separating the teams ranked from 2nd to 5th place. This week :"e"-funf have moved back into second spot, with Menzies rocketing up from 5th to 3rd, Wookies of Love sliding from 2nd to 4th and Black Cats moving back to 5th spot. This means that Carrot Cake will have a bye in the first round of the finals (essentially a quarterfinal) and the other teams are still battling for positions to determine their quarterfinal opponents.

With only 2 more weeks of minor round games in the Hobart Summer League, Carrot Cake are looking like the favourites to take out the minor premiership maintaining an 8 point lead in the league table. However, the fight for minor placings is fierce, with only 4 points separating the teams ranked from 2nd to 5th place. In the last round of games, Wookies of Love have reclaimed 2nd spot from :"e"-funf, with Black Cats taking 4th place from Menzies. An announcement on the finals format is due out soon, but it looks likely that all teams will have a chance to play in (and win) the grand final.

The Tassie Tiggers have started training on Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm at the Uni Oval. Players of all experience levels are welcome to attend, even those not considering playing with the Tiggers, since more people result in a better training session. This training session will be supplemented by fitness training from 3-4pm on Sunday afternoons at the Rugby Field, followed by a pickup game from 4-5pm (on weekends when TUC is not being played). The Tiggers are a Tasmanian team aiming to play in the open division at the Australian Ultimate Championships in Sydney in April. To achieve this goal, the team first needs to qualify, by playing the Southern Australian Ultimate Championships in Melbourne in March. Talk to Mike Baker if you want more information.

A full list of award winners from the 2005 Spring League is available (at last!) on the league history page. To confirm the results, Red Herring won both the spirit prize (shared with Geilston Bay) and the 2005 Spring League, having beaten Geilston Bay 9-5 in the final. The semi-finals were both closely contested games, with Red Herring holding off a late charge from Menzies to score the winning goal after scores were tied at time cap and Geilston Bay coming back from behind to beat All Bar One by a couple. The prize winners (and their prizes) include: Style in final - Jason Gedamke (Show Pony); Best recruiter - Michael Schmidt (Tarnished silver trophy and Charlie Pride record); Most improved novice, female - Janina Beyer (Girls Book of Ballet); Most improved novice, male - Andy Conlan (Biography of Charles Bronson); Guts in Final - Tim Phillips (Rusty Spanner/Tool); One off award: "No worries, I'll fix it myself award" - Andy Conlan (antique First Aid Kit); and Gratuitous in Final - Stewart Wilde (stylish leopard print shirt). Thanks again to Kerryn for organising the BBQ and to Tim Phillips for running the league!
