The earlybird registration deadline for the 2005 Summer League has just passed. League fees are now $30 (as long as you pay by January 9) or $50 if you pay after then. We really want to know how many teams are playing before the league starts this season!!

The Workers took out the latest Uni vs Workers Party Challenge winning 15-11 in a somewhat windy game
Pickup games may or may not occur over the Christmas/New Year break - you pays your money, you takes your chances, but Wednesday December 21 looks a good bet at this stage.
|
December 16
With the silly season approaching and lots of people on holidays, there is one more 'semi-official' frisbee game in Hobart this year. It's nominally between the workers (non-uni) and University staff/students at 6pm on Monday 19th December. It isn't quite clear if this is an official Uni vs Workers Party Challenge, or a glorified pickup game, but it should be fun in any case. The venue is Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay. Traditionally the Uni team wear black and the Workers' Party wear red (but it may be good to bring a black, a white and a red shirt just in case). Further enquiries to Dave Cooke! Pickup games may or may not occur over the Christmas/New Year break - you pays your money, you takes your chances!

In preliminary news, Red Herring won both the spirit prize (shared with Geilston Bay) and the 2005 Spring League, having beaten Geilston Bay 9-5 in the final. The semi-finals were both closely contested games, with Red Herring holding off a late charge from Menzies to score the winning goal after scores were tied at time cap and Geilston Bay coming back from behind to beat All Bar One by a couple. More details and a full list of prize winners later! Thanks to Kerryn for organising the BBQ and to Tim Phillips for running the league!

December 12
The earlybird registration deadline has been extended by a week, to Monday December 19, for the 2005 Summer League. If you miss this deadline, league fees will be $30 (if you pay by January 9) or $50 if you pay after then. We really want to know how many teams are playing before the league starts this season!!
|
December 7
After the completion of the minor round of the 2005 Spring League, Geilston Bay have regained their lead in the league table, despite finishing equal on points with Red Herring, with the minor premiership determined using the official tie breaking procedures. This sets up one semi-final between Geilston Bay and 4th placed All Bar One while Red Herring and Menzies play the other semi-final. The 5th/6th/7th playoff will involve some games played between between OHA, Others and Disc-o-techs. Don't forget the BBQ and presentations after the finals. Please talk to Kerryn if you plan to attend, and if you can bring along a salad! Also watch out for a quick meeting (at the BBQ) to discuss plans for the Tassie Tiggers who aim to play at both the Southern Regional Championships and at the National Championships in March and April 2006.

Congratulations to Matt Smith and his team for winning the 17th Melbourne Hat on the weekend. Matt was on the team which came second last year - this year he did one better! Some photos of the Hat appear on Matt's and JK's new photo gallery - check it out if you want to see a range of ultimate photos (and videos) with a Tasmanian theme. Eight other Tasmanians attended the Hat, along with another 250+ other players.

November 29
After week 6 of the 2005 Spring League, Red Herring have maintained their position at the top of the league table with a 1 point lead over Menzies. Third and fourth ranked teams Geilston Bay and All Bar One both have a game in hand so all places in the top 4 at the end of the minor round are still up for grabs. OHA still have a chance of making the top four and Disc-o-techs have a chance of making the 5th vs 6th playoff. Only one week of minor round games is left before the finals on Monday December 12.

November 28
Registration is now open for the 2006 Summer League to be held at the Sandown Park Hockey Fields, Lower Sandy Bay from January 16 to March 20. If you register and pay before the end of Spring League (December 17) you qualify for super cheap earlybird fees ($20 or $15 for students). Standard fees ($30) can be paid up until January 9 and late fees ($50) kick in after then. We want you to pay on time this league - besides places may be limited. If you want to guarantee a place, register (and pay) now! Don't forget to tell your friends about the free Learn to Play session on Monday January 9. Thanks to Matt Smith for stepping up to run this league.

November 28
After week 5 of the 2005 Spring League, there is yet another new league leader with Red Herring taking over from Geilston Bay at the top of the league table. The top 4 teams are now separated by just 1 point. Geilston Bay have a game in hand over the other teams in the top 4. Geilston Bay have to play each of the other top 4 teams in the remaining minor round games, whereas their rivals in the top 4 only have 1 minor round game against a top 4 opponent. There are two weeks of minor round games to play before the finals on Monday December 12. Matt Smith and JK have set up a new photo gallery, including Spring League photos, Two-Hat VII photos and a collection of Two-Hat VII and Two-Hat V videos. Check it out!

This was the last round of TUC for 2005, and White Trash are the 2005 Tasmanian Ultimate Champions, with a final score of 9 games to 6. TUC will probably change format (and times) in 2006, talk to Aaron if you want to have some input in this, or if you want to play in Hobart's most competitive ultimate league.

The official TD's report for the 7th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament is now available, including lots of photos and full results of the tournament. The Two-Hat history page has been also been updated - Shavawn's record in being a member of the spirit winning team 4 times is particularly notable - especially given that this award has only been made for the last 5 Two-Hats. The Two-Hat photo page now has links to photos and videos of the TV News coverage, with more photos coming soon. If you are interested in buying any bargain basement Two-Hat t-shirts, check out the merchandise section. Left over sports drink is also available for sale! If you want to run the Two-Hat next year (somebody needs to run it!), get in touch with Jemery...

Congratulations to Shavawn Donoghue for winning the 2005 AFDA award as AFDA "Administrator of the Year". Shavawn's work behind the ultimate scenes at several different levels has been very significant. She has served nationally on the AFDA board, at a state level as Treasurer of the TUA (a position she still holds and has occupied since incorporation of the TUA) and at the University level, serving initially as President and currently as Treasurer of the University of Tasmania Ultimate Frisbee Club. She has also led (and inspired and driven) Tasmanian teams at National championships, run Women's development, obtained the first ever funding from the Tasmanian Office of Sport and Recreation for ultimate frisbee, run coaching sessions, tournaments and provided general background support to keep ultimate healthy in Hobart. On top of this she has performed at the highest level, winning NUFL and two national Championships with Southside, and attending training camps and only narrowly missing selection to the Australian team for Worlds in 2004. If only she was in Hobart (and not heading for Antarctica on the Aurora Australis) we could help her drink her bottle of champagne! For more details, (and information on the co-winner, Anthony Perry from the ACT) check out the report on Trash Talk. On ya, Shavawn!

The Dark Side won the thirteenth round of the 2005 Tasmanian Ultimate Championships fair and square, beating White Trash 12-10. In a see-sawing game, the Dark Side started very strongly, taking the first 6 points, and (after a strong comeback by White Trash) the half 9-7. The scores were tied at 10-10 after half , before the Dark Side eventually closed out the game. Both teams had a full team (with substitutes). The series score is now 9 games to 4, to White Trash. Next game will probably be held on Sunday November 6.

The 7th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, has come and gone. Congratulations to Clockwork for being the first team in the history of the Two-Hat to win both the Spirit award and the tournament outright (beating the red team 9-2 in the final), and to Carlie Ryan (first registered), to Mike Baker and Pat Dunne (sharing the Play of the Day award - with honourable mention to Kate Godber) and to Joe Boyer (entering the Ten Hat Hall of Fame). Jens Meyer won the non-skirts division of the golf, with a score of 4 under and Jemery Day took out the skirts Division with a score of 2 under. The quiz night went down well at the Derwent City Bowls Club (thanks Felix and Tim J), and Ian Townsend won the party! The media also had a field day (thanks Tim P for teeing that up). Thanks to all those who helped out on the day, and to our interstate guests for coming to play! Watch out for a full TD's report soon!

There are still a few spaces left for late registrations for the 7th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, but get your registration and your money in as soon as you can. If you want to pay on the day, there will be an on-the-day fee of $60 (unless you are a brand new player)! Currently there are 43 fully paid players, and another 4 whose payments haven't arrived in the TUA bank account yet - you know who you are! You can check your own registration and payment details to see if your payment and registration have been received. If you want to know how to pay, check out the payment details page. Updated post-registration Two-Hat information is also available. Despite rumours to the contrary, it is very likely that the party will now be held very close to the fields, featuring a quiz night with quiz masters Felix and Tim at the Derwent City Bowls Club, 1 Ryde St, North Hobart. Showers will be available at the fields, so you can go straight from the final to the showers to the party!

The first Uni vs Workers Party Challenge was taken out by the University team, who retained Edwina in the process. The exact score is still a mystery but the game was well attended, 7 on 7 with a couple of subs per team, and Patrick Dunne appears to have been the standout player on defence.

September 30
It is now official, the 7th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament will have five teams. This means late registrations will continue to be accepted (well up to a limit of 60 players anyway). Even though you can register late, we want to know if you are coming (Stan has to organise the lunches and he wants to know how many to make!!), and the later you leave it, the more it costs - so go on register (and pay) now, if you haven't done so already! Currently there are 40 fully paid players, and another 8 whose payments haven't arrived in the TUA bank account yet. You can check your own registration and payment details to see if your payment and registration have been received (this page is updated every few days - don't expect immediate updates). If you don't know how to pay (registration will cost $50 or more from tomorrow!), check out the payment details page. Updated post-registration Two-Hat information is also available, and this information will be further updated when more details on the Two-Hat party are released.

September 28
The earlybird discount has now definitely closed for the 7th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, but the late registration fee kicks in really soon. If you haven't paid your registration fees by now, you have just two days to pay at the standard rate of $45, before the fees go up to $50 in October. Registrations are currently sitting on 45 players (but not everyone has paid yet!). If you want to play and haven't registered, you may still be able to sneak in, but the door may slam shut at any time - a final decision on 4 or 5 teams will be made this weekend. If it comes down on 5 teams, then there are still plenty of places. If it is 4 teams, then the numbers will be capped at 44 players - the first 44 people with their money on the table get to play - anyone else gets turned away! If you have already registered, you can check your registration details (this page is updated every few days - don't expect immediate updates) and check to see if your payment has been accepted. If you don't know how to pay (registration will costs $50 or more in October!), check out the payment details page. Updated post-registration Two-Hat information is also available, and this information will be further updated when more details on the Two-Hat party are released.

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the CSIRO/Uni Challenge has been reborn. However, like the Australian Cricket team, the CSIRO team seems to have lost the plot - or at least the ashes. In their place, the revolutionary Workers Party has emerged to challenge the Uni to a game on Friday September 30 5:45-7:00pm at the Uni Oval. Talk to Shavawn if you want to play for the Uni team or to Joe if you are one of the proletariat. Real revolutionaries wear red and Uni players wear their traditional black shirts. A couple of dollars donation would also be handy to pay for the use of the lights on the Uni Oval.

September 25
In a repeat of round 11, White Trash edged out the Dark Side, 11-10 in the twelfth round of the 2005 Tasmanian Ultimate Championships. However, to field 6 players, once again White Trash had to pick up two players, both of whom had previously played for the Dark Side, meaning that the game was effectively forfeited. This leaves the series delicately poised at 9 games to 3, to White Trash. Next game will probably be held on Sunday October 16.

September 23
Registration is now open for the 2005 Spring League to be held back at the traditional outdoor fields at the Sandown Park Hockey Fields, Lower Sandy Bay. Bring along some brand new players to the free Learn to Play session on October 10 - they can try before they buy!

Following the demise of the Tasmanian team for Mixed Nationals, the Wednesday evening training sessions have morphed into a Wednesday evening pickup game (at least for September 21 and 28) from 6-7pm under lights at the Uni Oval (or at the Rugby Field). Please bring along a gold coin donation to pay for the lights. The continued viability of this session will be discussed after the game today. In addition the Sunday training sessions are set to continue 3-5pm at the Rugby Field) - but only on Sundays when Tasmanian Ultimate Championships games are not held (i.e. 2 Sundays out of every 3). Want more details? Contact Matt Smith or Joe Boyer!

The earlybird discount has now officially closed, but there are still limited places available for the 7th Tasmanian Two-Hat Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. If you want to guarantee a place, register on line and pay your money ASAP! T-shirts are going to the printer this week and, at this stage, there may only be sufficient numbers for 4 teams at Two-Hat VII. In this case, registrations will be capped at 44 players, which leaves only 5 places left. If these places are filled by September 23, we may be able to print t-shirts for a 5th team and allow a few more places! If you have already registered, you can check your registration details (this page is updated every few days - don't expect immediate updates) and check to see if your payment has been accepted. If you don't know how to pay (registration now costs $45), check out the payment details page. Preliminary post-registration Two-Hat information is also available, and this information will be updated periodically.

In yet another very close game, White Trash edged out the Dark Side, 17-14 in the eleventh round of the 2005 Tasmanian Ultimate Championships. This leaves the series delicately poised at 9 games to 2, to White Trash. Next game will probably be held on Sunday September 25.
