7 hot tips for being a rules ready Player at WUCC 2010 and Under 23s

COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS UNTIL WUCC? REMEMBER - BE CALM!!

7 hot tips for being a rules ready Player at WUCC 2010 and Under 23s

With only a couple of weeks to WUCC, now is the time to brush up on your rules knowledge so that you don’t look like a massive chump by calling a wrapping infraction when you intended to call a straddle infraction. These visuals should help you out with all things infraction related:

The following tips should help you out:

1. Keep your ‘notes’ close at hand
Print out the rules and keep them with your travel documentation. http://ultimaterules.co.cc/?page_id=162.

Scenario: Your budget air carrier taking you to Prague provides entertainment in the form of a retrospective look on the Olsen twins “acting” career. You could either; subject yourself to the torture of trying to watch a movie where you lose sight of the main characters every time they turn sideways OR familiarise yourself with rules such as the ‘offside rule” (7.6)

2. Test Yourself
Take the Expert Rules Quiz – Large Version: http://ultimaterules.co.cc/?page_id=1130.

That’s right. Get hardcore on the rules – I’d like this version to be called Rueben’s super-hardcore WFDF rules chairman’s cut so that it sounds like something that can only be imported from various Asian countries that have lax censorship rules or obtained from a certain suburb in Canberra. If you can master all 70 questions before Prague you’re bound to impress those hot Scandinavian players with your knowledge of how play continues after an indirect foul.

3. Familiarise Yourself with the Appendix.
The WFDF appendix to the rules of ultimate applies to all championship events. There have recently been some amendments – check out the appendix (including a track changes version) here: http://ultimaterules.co.cc/?page_id=1787.

4. Timing is Everything
The above mentioned appendix outlines how long you have for half, time outs, time between points etc. In summary:
· 15 seconds: for the offence in mixed division to indicate whether they will be playing with 4 women or 4 men
· 15 seconds: for the defence to check the disc in after the end of a time out
· 30 seconds: for players to resolve a call before captains step in
· 60 seconds: If a call isn’t resolved after this point, the call will be considered contested (and the disc is returned to the thrower)
· 60 seconds: the offence has from the start of a point to indicate it is ready for the pull
· 75 seconds: The time the defence has from the start of a point to pull the disc
· 2 minutes: the time the offence has to be ready to resume play after the start of a time out
· 5 minutes: the toss must be completed 5 minutes before the game
· 10 minutes: length of half time
· 45 minutes: half time cap (when half time occurs if no team has reached 9 goals before this point)
· 100 minutes: length of a game

5. They Do It Differently in North America
What a surprise, our Seppo and Canukistanian peers have to play the game by different rules. So you can help out a confused North American, there is a summary of the differences between USA Ultimate rules and WFDF rules here: http://ultimaterules.co.cc/?page_id=801.

6. Use Your Hands
News flash: Not everyone at WUCC will speak English – apparently there are other languages out there. Check out the official WFDF signals: http://www.wfdf.org/rules/WFDF_Hand_Signals_for_Ultimate_2009.pdf.

They will be useful when playing against non English speaking teams, when queuing for drinks at the pub (the pick and violation signals) and at other social occasions (I’ll leave you to imagine the scenario when you have to indicate a technical stoppage or signal for 4 men).

7. Just like Frankie Say ‘Relax’ – WFDF Says ‘BE CALM’
In a tight scenario on the field (or even in the same scenario where you had to signal for 4 men) you might find the following strategy assists in stopping a situation from escalating out of control:
Breathe don’t react straight away
Explain what you think happened
Consider what they think happened
Ask other players for advice (on perspective and rules)if needed
Listen to what everyone has had to say
Make a call loudly and clearly (and use hand signals)

Good Luck Players.
As always – I’m happy to answer further questions.
