Official Rules of Ultimate
WFDF
Australia uses the WFDF Rules of Ultimate, the same as used at all World Championships. Individual events may have local variants.
The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is the international governing body for all flying disc sports.
A Pocket Version of the Rules can be found here.
UPA
The Ultimate Players
Association (UPA) is the governing body in the United States,
where ultimate was first invented. All play up to national level in
North America (Canada and the U.S.) takes place under UPA 11th Edition Rules.
Differences between WFDF and UPA
The chief differences between the WFDF rules and UPA rules are listed here.
For those who are new to WFDF rules, please note that under WFDF rules:
- endzones are 18 metres deep, and the playing field proper is 64 metres long
- if the disc is in the air when a call is made, the disc may be returned to the thrower in some situations
- a player must be within 5 metres of the player they are guarding to call a pick
- a team must put the disc into play without delay, but there is no specific time limit
- observers are not used
Simple Rules
There is a printable MS Word version of the simple rules which
you can use for distributing to newcomers to our sport.
Variations on Ultimate
