Why Ultimate Frisbee and Juniors are a great mix

Ultimate Frisbee is a very new sport in Australian schools. Children instantly love frisbee whenever they are introduced to the sport. It is growing at a huge rate, and we hope to assist that growth.

Ultimate has the following benefits for child development:

  • Non-contact - as a non-contact sport it is a great, safe sport for children of all ages, sizes and abilities.
  • Self-refereed - the self-refereeing aspect of Ultimate encourages a mature response to competitive situations.
  • Dexterity - the inherently complex task of throwing a frisbee accurately and catching it successfully is great for the development hand-eye co-ordination
  • Fun - playing frisbee is so much fun that children who otherwise have only a passing interest in sport will be hooked! They will want to throw at the beach, in the park, at family BBQs, in class...

Buying Frisbees

We strongly recommend getting the best discs if you are serious about it as a sport. The discraft ultrastar is the disc of choice world-wide. It is 175grams and is very stable, making it ideal in all wind conditions, far superior to what you can buy in your average sports store.

You can buy frisbees from these contacts near you. Usual cost is $15-$20 per disc plus postage.

For very young children, smaller, lighter frisbees are probably more suitable, and frisbees available in sports stores may suffice.

Coaching

Coaching by experienced coaches is the best way of improving individual and team skills. Qualified coaches are available for schools wherever ultimate is played in Australia. See regions in the main menu for local contacts.

Competition

There are a number of school competitions already in existence in Australia. Most notably on Sydney's upper north shore and northern beaches.

Te get a school comp going in your area, simply approach some local schools to get ultimate introduced and away you go!

Gala Days

We are starting to run Gala Days which allows schools from all over to compete against each other in a one-day tournament.

The first one in Sydney in 2002 was a huge success and they have only been getting better. 2004 took a stride forward as a result of having the experience from World Championships in August that year.

Leagues

Every capital city in Australia (and a number of larger regional centres) has a social league. These leagues are primarily fun but also a chance to interact with senior players and learn a lot more about the game. Juniors players will always be welcomed with open arms.

To find the league nearest you, look under regions in the main menu.

Tournaments

For more info about tournaments happening near you, see the Australian tournament calendar

Universities

Ultimate is an official university sport as a part of the Australian University Games. High school players have a great opportunity to take their sport to the next level at uni.

A number of universities are even offering scholarships for first year students who are promising ultimate players!

Australian Championships

We are actively encouraging Juniors teams to compete in the Australian Ultimate Championships. The next will be in April 2009.

World Championships

The AFDA sent the first ever Juniors Boys and Juniors Girls teams to the 2004 World Ultimate Championships in Turku, Finland; then again to Boston in 2006, where our women won BRONZE and both teams won SPIRIT!! The men missed out on bronze by one point. For more information, see the section on Worlds. Our next target is the 2008 World Ultimate Juniors Championships to be held in Vancouver, Canada in August 2008.
