Controversy Corner
Question: Should any eligible team be able to enter and win the Australian Championships?
| Background: | In 2003 and before, any eligible team had a theoretical chance of winning Nationals. In 2004 a two-tier system was used to allow any team to enter the championship, but only the top 12 were able to win. Other models proposed for the future include regional qualifying tournaments and restricting the size of Nationals to 16 teams. Arguments for limiting participation include raising the level of play and making the tournament more manageable for the organisers. The alternative arguments are that any team should be given a chance to win, that letting rookie teams in helps their development, that restricting participation may mean some regions will not be represented at Nationals, and that Nationals has traditionally been an inclusive event. |
